UCLA Health seeks a Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) to lead its compliance program. The compliance department at UCLA Health comprises a team of ~29 FTEs that spans compliance subject matter areas that include physician and hospital billing and coding, clinical research billing, fraud and abuse, and privacy. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, UCLA Health Sciences/CEO of UCLA Health and Senior Vice President of Compliance and Audit, Office of the President this position is responsible for the strategic leadership, direction and adherence to the compliance program for the UCLA Health System and the David Geffen School of Medicine, including general compliance and privacy.


In an effort to further our mission of providing quality research, teaching and health care while at the same time advancing the prevention of fraud, abuse and waste in the UCLA academic health sciences setting, a corporate compliance program has been adopted and implemented. The CCO will facilitate leadership, direction and accountability for the Corporate Compliance Program for UCLA Health. This includes but is not limited to the UCLA Health System Compliance Program, including the four hospitals, more than 250 clinics plus the faculty practice group, and the School of Medicine. The CCO will work collaboratively with leaders across the organization to identify, assess and resolve compliance and privacy issues, including coordinating and leading any projects or policy redesigns to accomplish compliance with relevant laws, statutes and regulations applicable to UCLA Health. Along with the Office of Compliance Services professional and administrative staff, the Chief Privacy Officer also reports to the Chief Compliance Officer and as such the incumbent has oversight responsibilities for directing all ongoing activities related to the development, implementation, maintenance and adherence to the organization’s policies and procedures covering the privacy of and access to patient health information in compliance with federal and state laws and the healthcare organization’s information privacy practices.


The CCO must possess a combination of skills and abilities to successfully manage a complex set of responsibilities in a high profile, academic health sciences organization, including extensive corporate compliance experience in health care, preferably in an academic health sciences setting with a demonstrated understanding of all elements of corporate compliance in relationship to practice plan management and health care delivery, including strategy, business planning, operations and finance.


The CCO will have knowledge of federal and state health services regulations, including Medicare and Medi-Cal, third party payers, HIPAA and state privacy rules and regulations and other external agencies and businesses. The successful candidate will also be familiar with the issues and challenges facing the clinical, education, research and community outreach components of the Health Sciences and possess the ability to adopt corporate compliance efforts to effectively respond to changes in health care and research practices, legal/regulatory changes and technological trends. Other critical competencies include the ability to integrate functions across units in a complex multi-mission organization, communicate with diverse groups both within and outside of the University, build a climate of trust, and inspire others to accomplish results. The CCO must demonstrate and set high standards of behavior, performance, quality, credibility and integrity; they are also expected to uphold an ongoing commitment to meeting affirmative action goals in recruitment, selection and development of staff. A Juris Doctor, Master’s degree in Business, Health Care Administration, Public Health or equivalent experience is preferred. CHC, CHC-F, CHRC and / or CCEP is also referred. The University of California, Los Angeles is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $176,700 to $473,100. As a condition of employment, you will be required to comply with the University of California SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Vaccination Program Policy. All Covered Individuals under the policy must provide proof of Full Vaccination or, if applicable, submit a request for Exception (based on Medical Exemption, Disability, and/or Religious Objection) or Deferral (based on pregnancy) no later than the applicable deadline.
