Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to manage the development and implementation of research projects conducted at the Washington University Center for Integrative Research on Cognition, Learning, and Education (CIRCLE). The Staff Research Associate will interact daily with the Center’s directors and staff, and with the University faculty who are collaborating on the Center’s current research projects.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Research and Project Management

  • Collaborate with the CIRCLE Director and Washington University faculty to develop and implement research projects that advance the Center’s mission.
  • Work with each project’s research team to use sound principles of experimental behavioral research to design studies appropriate to each project.
  • Manage the Center’s daily work on each research project.
  • Oversee data collection and analysis.
  • Ensure that research proceeds in a timely and organized manner, according to timelines developed by each projects’ principle investigators.
  • Coordinate and organize CIRCLE meetings and university-wide meetings for postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and faculty interested and/or participating in scholarship of learning and teaching activities (e.g., the Education Research Meetings).

Writing and Scholarship

  • Work with the CIRCLE Director and faculty to write research-grant proposals.
  • Write scholarly articles with the CIRCLE Director and collaborating faculty, and submit these articles to peer-reviewed publications.
  • Design and create posters and other materials disseminating findings of CIRCLE research projects with the CIRCLE Director and collaborating faculty.
  • Work with the CIRCLE Director to develop and write materials relevant to the Center’s research projects. Develop experimental designs, protocols, and procedures for the Center’s research projects.

Preferred Qualificaitons

  • Ph.D. in Psychology.
  • Experience designing evaluative studies in higher education.
  • Knowledge and training in pedagogy, course design, and evidenced-based pedagogies.
  • At least 2 years of experience conducting research in classroom settings in higher-education institutions.
  • Knowledge of standard protocols for conducting human-subject research, including IRB-approved protocols for protecting the confidentiality and privacy of participants in behavioral/educational research.
  • A record of accomplishment in independent research, with demonstrable knowledge of sound experimental design and evaluative research methods, as well as a strong command of statistical analysis and statistical software, such as R, SAS or SPSS.
  • Excellent project-management and organizational skills, including attention to detail and sensitivity to data quality. 
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to interact with research personnel at various levels of responsibility (staff, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty).
  • Excellent critical-thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility and desire to expand areas of expertise through collaborative work across disciplinary boundaries.
  • Ability to work well with diverse individuals across the disciplines and the University.
  • Ability to manage and complete multiple time-sensitive projects.
  • The ability to supervise and mentor postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students who are contributing to the Center’s research projects.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively with the Center’s Director and staff, and with faculty and staff from other academic departments and centers.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and five years of experience or Master's degree and three years of experience or PhD. and one year of experience.

Salary Range
$46,100.00 - $83,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
