About the role:
Under the general supervision of the Senior Director of Scientific Programs, the Science Program Manager will manage the day-to-day operations of the Janelia Visiting Scientist Program and assist with the creation and implementation of the strategic vision and direction of the program. The Janelia Visiting Scientist Program brings together scientists to solve interdisciplinary problems – often making use of new and innovative technologies developed at Janelia.

What you’ll do:
Provide scientific and operational support of the Janelia Visiting Scientists Program
Develop new workflows and procedures in response to changing needs at the institute, department, or program level
Contribute ideas and efforts to improve program quality and in turn, achievement of Janelia’s overall mission
Maintain up-to-date program-related information on the Janelia website
Communicate directly with scientific staff (including Group Leaders, Fellows and Senior Fellows) regarding program activities, policies, or changes
Respond to inquiries from active and potential visitors and Janelia hosts
Serve as initial contact for program participants and provides direction and scientific advice as needed
Manage the visiting scientist program budget
Lead scientific tours for Janelia visitors and guests
What you bring:
PhD degree in a scientific discipline relevant to Janelia’s research is required
Two or more years of postdoctoral research experience or equivalent
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
Demonstrated ability to identify issues and propose methodological solutions
Ability to think conceptually
Excellent judgment, attention to detail and discretion are required
Ability to handle confidential information
Excellent verbal and written communication
Physical Requirements:
Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
