Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

A Professional Track Research Faculty role (Assistant Research Professor or Assistant Research Scientist) position is available in Dr. Katrina Groth’s Systems Risk and Reliability Analysis (SyRRA) lab in the University of Maryland’s Center for Risk and Reliability (CRR). The ideal candidate is an experienced researcher with expertise in hydrogen safety, systems safety, risk analysis, or reliability data collection and a desire to lead projects with direct impact on the rollout of hydrogen energy technologies. This position is intended for experienced researchers looking to build a long-term career in applied engineering research.

The SyRRA lab and CRR are housed within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, home to the top Reliability Engineering graduate program in the U.S. The SyRRA lab conducts rigorous basic and applied research into quantitative risk assessment and decision making under uncertainty for complex engineering systems. Primary application areas are energy systems, including hydrogen fuel cell infrastructure and natural gas pipelines.

The candidate will lead existing projects in the area of hydrogen safety and quantitative risk assessment (QRA), and will also work with the PI to propose new directions. On any given day, the selected applicant may be asked to:
  • Work with a team of engineers, researchers and graduate students designing reliability databases, building probabilistic models, and conducting quantitative risk assessments on energy systems
  • Manage research funded by the federal government, national laboratories, and industry
  • Prepare presentations, reports, and scholarly publications to communicate research results and solicit feedback from external sponsors and stakeholders
  • Coordinate workshops and meetings with hydrogen industry experts, system designers, and research sponsors to facilitate exchange of data and information.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Ph.D. in engineering with expertise in one of the following disciplines: Reliability Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Civil Engineering, or closely related field.

Experience:

Past experience managing a technical team or directing and training junior researchers (e.g., graduate students).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; proficiency preparing high-impact visual presentations, written reports, and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate engineering information to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong publication or funding record demonstrating original thinking and ability to conduct impactful research.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following techniques: QRA, PRA, PHA, Hazop, FMEA, Bayesian Networks.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Experience writing proposals.
  • Experience with fire modeling or CFD.
  • Experience managing projects or familiarity with project management techniques in team context.
  • Familiarity with one or more types of hydrogen technologies and/or applications.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the USA.
