The JC Raulston Arboretum is a nationally acclaimed garden with one of the largest and most diverse collections of landscape plants adapted for landscape use in the Southeast. It is part of the NC State University’s campus and offers a unique opportunity for students to study and enjoy this diverse collection of plants. Part of the Arboretum’s mission is to provide educational experiences to the general public, students of all ages, and the green industry. The JC Raulston Arboretum maintains a vibrant calendar of programs ranging from free, online programming to weekend symposiums to summer camps for children and youth.

The Marketing and Communications Intern will manage our social media accounts and share all the wonderful things happening in the garden—from special events like Moonlight in the Garden and Raulston Blooms!, to children’s storytimes and summer camps, to a broad range of educational programs, workshops, classes. Our mission is to connect people with plants.

You will create awareness in our neighborhood and community about the arboretum and what we do. Enhance the visitor experience so they are sure to return. Update existing and discover new event listings and community calendars.

Write and publish external communications with our email service provider and other assignments as needed.

This paid summer internship allows students with a flair for creative writing and visual communications the chance to gain valuable on the job experience while working in a beautiful setting.

We are looking for full-time undergraduate students in a 4-year college program, preferably majoring in business administration, communications, marketing or English. Students in horticulture, landscape design, botany or other plant related sciences with excellent communications skills should also apply.

Internship will run from May 15 until August 11, 2023

Minimum Experience/Education

  • Full-time undergraduate student in a 4-year college program, preferably majoring in business administration, communications, marketing or English

Department Required Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Experience using Canva, Adobe, or other creative/design development software
  • Experience writing and creating content for various platforms and audiences such as social media, email, website, print publications, press, or community relations
  • Ability to take on new tasks and work independently
  • Strong project management, multitasking, and decision-making skills
  • Follow and complete instructions and work with common safety practices to protect yourself as well as fellow Arboretum staff

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Photography and videography experience is a plus. Keen eye for photography and experience creating videos for social media
  • Engaging and building relationships on social media
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and creative team player
