Job Description


The Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology at the University of Virginia seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the role of cholesterol in neuroinflammation and Alzheimer’s disease. The lab is affiliated with the Neuroscience Department and a member of the Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG) Center. The incumbent will conduct research in the laboratory of Dr. Heather Ferris. Strong skills in molecular biology, confocal microscopy and/or in vivo mouse work required. Incumbent will be expected to contribute to project design and participate in a collaborative lab environment. T32 funding slots are available for those who qualify.

Duties:

  • Full-time research or scholarship at the University.
  • Preparatory for a full-time academic or research career.
  • Supervised by a senior scholar, design experiments, conduct research, and prepare manuscripts for publication in leading journals and peer-reviewed academic conferences.
  • Culturing of mouse primary astrocytes.
  • Mouse brain
  • Molecular biology: cloning, Western blots, ELISA, qPCR, etc.
  • Lentiviral and adenoviral construct generation and use in vitro and in vivo.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of research or scholarship during the training period.

The University of Virginia is located in picturesque and historical Charlottesville, with outstanding schools, affordable housing, and is less than two hours from Washington, DC, and only an hour away from Richmond, VA.

This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.

MINIMUMREQUIREMENTS

Education: Ph.D. degree by appointment start date.

Experience: A background in Neuroscience or Metabolism, as well as extensive experience in conducting independent research and supervising research trainees and/or technicians is preferred. In addition, candidates should have first author publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and effective oral and written communication skills. Candidates with experience in animal research are also preferred.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
