School of Dentistry has an outstanding opportunity for a Maintenance Mechanic 1.Working the day shift, 10:00 AM-06:30 PM, and has regular school-wide contact with department and clinic staff, and faculty and students.

The Office of Clinical Services (OCS) at the School of Dentistry encompasses the Patient Intake, Predoc Clinic Coordination, Simulation Clinic and Labs, Central Sterilization, two dispensaries, and Dental Maintenance. OCS supports the operations of 13 dental clinics in delivering dental care to the state’s largest and most diverse patient population. We utilize a team oriented approach and work very hard to delight our patients.

The Dental Maintenance team supports the School of Dentistry’s predoctoral and postdoctoral clinics, labs, and offices and serves as a resource in supporting all faculty students and staff by maintaining equipment and furnishings. Clinics and offices are located in the D and B wings of the Magnuson Health Sciences building, and at Building 5 in nearby Magnuson Park in the Sandpoint area.

This position reports to the School’s Facilities Manager and receives technical direction from the Machinery Mechanic to perform a variety of semi-skilled work requiring a limited knowledge of various trade skills such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, machining, etc. The Maintenance Mechanic 1 primarily works in tandem with the Machinery Mechanic but may work independently in routine maintenance assignments or on delegated projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist in maintaining and repairing dental chairs, hand-piece workstations and lab equipment, including burnout and porcelain ovens, curing units, lathes, model grinders, polishers, blasters, vibrators, steamers, ovens, curing units, workbench suction, pressure pots, casting well & torches, x-ray digital scanners and x-ray exposure machines and drill presses.
• Participate in cleaning or changing filters, change oil, lubricate, adjust drive belts, and inspecting sprockets, shafts, and bearings to ensure proper operation.
• Under the direction of the Machinery Mechanic, may operate a variety of hand, power, precision, and stationary shop tools and equipment in the Dental Maintenance shop.
• Assemble materials or equipment as required and transport materials, supplies or equipment throughout the school’s clinics and labs.
• May assist journey trades workers by performing duties related to carpentry, painting, plastering, plumbing, steam-fitting, mechanical or electrical work, refrigeration maintenance, machinist trades, etc.
• Enter data into maintenance logs and keep information up to date.
• Assist Dental Maintenance Team in completing electronic work tickets in the DentFix ticketing system used by school-wide stakeholders.
• Assist Dental Maintenance team with any special preparations for the annual state WREB exam.
• May attend off-site technical training courses provided by dental chair manufacturers and involve travel at School expense at the request of the Facilities Manager.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

High school graduation or GED equivalent; OR, six month's full-time related vocational study or training; OR, six months' applicable work experience; AND, one year's full-time experience as a helper in building and equipment maintenance, construction, repair work, or equivalent.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Valid driver's license recognized by the State of Washington.
• While work normally falls within standard business hours, the position requires flexibility to deal with emergency situations and other scheduled work outside of the school’s normal hours.
• Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment.
• Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
• Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required.
• Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions.
• Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job.
• Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in the University of Washington Health Sciences building
• A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire.
