Job Description


The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine is currently seeking a Research Associate (post-doctoral research fellow), MD or PhD, to work and study in an NIH-funded laboratory directed by Dr. Jonathan Lindner. The laboratory has interests at the intersection of biology and non-invasive imaging and is composed of a multidisciplinary team of investigators with expertise in vascular biology, non-invasive imaging, microvascular physiology, and acoustic physics. This combination of skills is combined to develop novel methods for molecular imaging, perfusion imaging, and cardiovascular functional imaging to better understand disease pathophysiology, to discover new therapeutic targets, and to develop novel diagnostic algorithms that can improve patient care. Specific areas of research include: a) application of molecular imaging techniques to characterize pathophysiology and assess therapy for atherosclerotic, vascular, and valvular disease; b) microvascular function and endothelial abnormalities in insulin resistance, heart failure and radiation exposure; and c) microvascular responses to acute and chronic myocardial and limb ischemia; d) development of ultrasound-based therapies based on site-targeted gene or drug delivery, and vascular bio-effects of cavitation.

The incumbent will participate in a multiplicity of relevant lab projects and in writing study reports for the study sponsors, papers, and grant applications and is expected to develop research programs as time permits. The incumbent will also be expected to attend and participate in laboratory meetings and CVRC-related seminars, as well as work with graduate students, technicians, fellows and collaborators in the laboratories involved in the project. 

Job responsibilities include:
•    Full-time research or scholarship at the University
•    Preparatory for a full-time academic or research career
•    Supervised by a senior scholar; and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship
•    In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Doctoral degree at the time of hire.
Experience: Experience in vascular biology, microscopy, ultrasound imaging, murine models of disease, and human cardiovascular imaging is preferred.

Physical demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. This position will sponsor applicants for work visas.  This position is located in Charlottesville, Virginia.  The position will remain open until filled.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.
