The Vertex Internship Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective. You will be working closely with and learning from some of the brightest people in the industry. Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly motivated, independent and innovtive summer intern to join our Engineering and Applied Physics Research Group. Our team is dedicated to the selective application of advanced technologies and algorithms to enhance the discovery capabilities of biologists and chemists. As part of this internship the candidate will have the opportunity to conduct high level research in applied Machine Learning in Computer Vision in the field of Drug Discovery.

Key responsibilities:
  • Create Deep Learning models for quantification, classification, and evaluation of microscopy images
  • Write production-grade and well documented code for deployment
  • Participate in scientific discussions with Vertex scientists
  • Communicate efficiently both verbally and in writing as well as interact cross functionally
  • Work closely with domain experts in cross-disciplinary teams to generate actionable insights

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or MS with relevant experience in machine learning as applied to image analysis
  • Competency in python, R, or Matlab
  • Familiarity with TensorFlow or Pytorch
  • Experience with developing, trouble shooting and validating Deep Learning models for diverse Computer Vision tasks
  • Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States as Vertex does not sponsor student work visas
  • Candidate must be enrolled in a graduate degree program in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or a related field
  • Minimum 3.2 GPA
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with microscopy image analysis and/or digital histopathology
  • Experience with unsupervised, weakly-supervised, or semi-supervised learning is plus
  • Track record of published papers in major journals or conferences
  • Previous experience as a bench scientist
  • Github repo with relevant projects
  • Highly motivated and energetic
  • Strong work ethic and tenacity
  • A desire to be part of a highly innovative company aimed at transforming the lives of people with serious diseases, their families, and society
 
Pay Range $26.00 – $50.00 USD/hour
 
This job posting is for a temporary role with a third-party agency partner that provides services to Vertex. The individual selected for this role will be offered the role as an employee of that third-party agency; compensation, medical benefits, fringe benefits and other terms and conditions of employment shall be presented by the third-party agency upon offer. The range provided is a reasonable estimate for the pay range for this job at the time of posting. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. The actual pay rate will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
