Position Summary

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the research group of Dr. Sotiras, a part of the Computational Imaging Laboratories (CIL) at Washington University in St. Louis. The primary focus of the group is to use machine learning and image analysis methods to solve clinical neuroscience problems. CIL is a diverse and interdisciplinary team whose research focuses on advancing imaging informatics technology and developing advanced computational techniques for quantitative image analysis.

The successful candidate will lead or participate in projects developing, implementing, and applying machine learning algorithms for the analysis and interpretation of medical images and related clinical data. More specifically, the successful candidate will develop novel computational and analytical techniques to improve our understanding of brain structure and function in health and disease. Applications include studying Alzheimer's disease and brain development. Anticipated activities entail integrating of multi-modal imaging data, analyzing the relationship between brain imaging markers and cognition or clinical status, and building predictive tools for patient-specific diagnosis and prognosis. Attention to detail, organizational capability, and the ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks are essential. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to be able to work independently, as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to work closely with clinical investigators and will have ample opportunities to present research methods and scientific findings at national and international conferences, and to publish results in academic journals.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages their own project, preparing and submitting papers on research.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Assists in the design of research experiments.
  • Develops proficiency in their ancillary skills, e.g., writing, public speaking, networking, critical evaluation of scientific documents, etc.
  • Evaluates research findings and assists in the reporting of scientific work both inside and outside the university.
  • Provides guidance and mentorship for more junior lab members.
  • Maintains conscientious discharge of their research responsibilities.
  • Maintains conformity with ethical standards in research.
  • Complies with good laboratory practice, including the maintenance of adequate research records.
  • Maintains open and timely discussion with their mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
  • Maintains collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
  • Adheres to all applicable university policies, procedures, and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in university laboratories remain the property of the university.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D., M.D., D.Sc. or an equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in neuroscience, psychology, computer science, electrical engineering, computer science, physics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong background in scientific computing (e.g., Unix/Linux experience).
  • Proficiency in quantitative analytical methods and computer programming (e.g., Matlab, shell scripting, Python, C).
  • Experience with medical image analysis, neuroimaging analysis software suites, (e.g., custom routines, FSL, AFNI, Freesurfer) and statistical analyses (e.g., R).
  • Academic proficiency in statistics is strongly desired.
  • Strong publication record, documented by publications in top-tier medical imaging, computer vision, and/or machine learning conferences and journals.
  • Highly motivated with excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and within a multidisciplinary team.

Working Conditions

This position is in an office environment and typically sitting at a desk or table.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
