Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Materials Sciences Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

The Molecular Foundry is a national user facility for nanoscale science and is one of five Department of Energy Nanoscale Science Research Centers. You will contribute to a multidisciplinary research center at the forefront of nanoscale science, in a unique collaborative and interdisciplinary facility.

In this exciting role, you will join the Nanofabrication Facility at The Molecular Foundry in multidisciplinary, multi-institutional collaboration as part of the Center for High Precision Patterning Science (CHiPPS), an Energy Frontiers Research Center funded by the Department of Energy, Basic Energy Sciences. This is a unique opportunity for world-class research on self-assembly of block copolymers for applications in Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUVL). The successful candidate is expected to work in a clean room environment and across user facilities.

What You Will Do:

  • Design and test protocols for self-assembly and directed self-assembly
  • Study interfacial interactions between lithographically defined substrates and block copolymer assembly in the context of EUV lithography
  • Study thermodynamic and kinetic landscapes for self-assembly and map properties and processes to find best block copolymer materials for sub-10 nm assembly
  • Collaborate with chemical engineers, modelers and EUV lithographers to determine the optimal design rules for next generation patterning materials, from image formation to pattern transfer.
  • Imaging techniques: SEM, AFM
  • Clean room nanofabrication, RIE, ALD, PECVD
  • Collaborate with other research teams and scientists.
  • Publish work in peer-reviewed scientific literature.
  • Present work at national meetings and at regular group meetings.
  • Contribute positively to the active research culture.
  • Perform work in accordance with EH&S guidelines and regulations
  • Support and contribute to the culture of diversity and inclusion.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Characterization techniques: TEM, DLS, TGA, FTIR, NMR, GPC, HPLC, GISAXS, XPS, RSoX
  • Image Processing. Programming code.
  • Provide training and guidance to other staff members including undergraduate, Master's and PhD level students.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Soft-Matter Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Safety conscious with a good understanding of positive safety culture.
  • Strong publication record in top-rated scientific journals, with extensive experience in the preparation and handling of scientific manuscripts, reports, and research posters.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with self-assembly of block copolymers
  • Experience with cleanroom nanofabrication. Photolithography or E-beam lithography, ICP-RIE, ALD, PECVD, SEM, AFM.
  • Programming languages, image processing or modeling experience.
