Job Description

Full Job Description

San Diego Humane Society is hiring an Associate Director for our Philanthropy team!

How you’ll impact our mission:

At San Diego Humane Society, we’re united by our mission to Inspire Compassion. Philanthropy is foundational to our ability to serve the people and animals of our community, and the Associate Director of Philanthropy will proactively build critical philanthropic relationships by identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding mid-level and major donors, with a focus on individuals.

This position will build the generosity of San Diego Humane Society’s existing supporters and proactively identify and engage new prospective major donors; in doing so, the Associate Director plays an integral role in building SDHS’ donor pipeline and comprehensive campaign that sustain the organization. At SDHS, the Philanthropy team is an essential partner throughout the organization with a strong sense of shared purpose. This position will be a part of a team that provides collegiality, stability, collaboration and humor.

If you’re passionate about making an impact in the animal welfare movement, and you’d like to do so in a professional, supportive and high performing team, we’d love to talk to you.

What’s in it for you?

At SDHS, we’re proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer and commit to being a place where every person – staff, volunteer, and guest – can feel a sense of belonging. We support and invest in employees through conscious delivery of benefits and a workplace environment based on our Core Values.

As an employee you’ll enjoy:

  • Competitive pay and paid time-off (including your Birthday Day Off!)
  • Comprehensive benefits package, training and well-being programs
  • 403(b) retirement plan with 5% match after 1 year
  • Free pet adoptions, pet vaccines and spay/neuter services
  • Relocation negotiable
  • …and so much more!

What you’ll do:

  • Conduct significant qualification activity among current annual donors through on-campus tours, phone calls, off-site meetings and other opportunities for engagement and qualification.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of approximately 100+ prospects, moving them from identification through solicitation to stewardship.
  • Be thoroughly knowledgeable about the history, philosophy, programs and services of SDHS. Accurately and professionally articulate this information to donors and prospects, aligning it appropriately with the individual’s philanthropic interests and goals.
  • Understand and comply with all SDHS gift-related policies and procedures, and ensure full ethical compliance as defined by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
  • Stay current with industry trends in all aspects of donor relations and corporate relations.
  • Actively participate in community outreach efforts as needed, including on-campus activities and outside speaking engagements.

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
  • Requires a minimum of three (3) years professional experience in fundraising or related field, with at least one (1) year of experience interacting directly with donors in person
  • Individual fundraising experience preferred
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be approved by SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes

The ideal candidate will have personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the SDHS mission – you’re a proactive, strategic thinker with experience working directly with individual donors to develop relationships on behalf of the institution and secure greater levels of generosity.

Other relevant experience should include knowledge of fundraising principles and strategies and demonstrated experience successfully implementing such strategies, and the ability to function independently and manage time well without close supervision, but to know when and how to seek collaboration, insight and guidance.

Location: Supporting all campuses, but based at our San Diego Campus. After the orientation period, this position has the potential for remote work some days of the week.

Pay: Starting range is between $78,021 - $90,000 annually. The actual starting salary is determined by your related education and experience. Relocation negotiable.
