General Description
Provide comprehensive student success advising services to students. The student success advisor will assist students in academic planning, choosing a major, resolving academic difficulties, addressing personal challenges, and providing information about the College’s available support services & resources

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s Degree.

Two years full-time work experience demonstrating ability to work with well one-on-one with students.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to work flexible and evening hours.

Demonstrated positive human relations and communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work well one-on-one with individuals.

Basic computer literacy.

Ability to problem-solve
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sedentary work: The person in this position may occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
This position requires the person to frequently move about the Office of Academic Advising to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, administration, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

This position frequently requires the person to operate a computer and other office equipment to perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to frequently operate equipment that involves repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.

This position requires the person to frequently position self to access materials that may be above head or at ground level.

3. VISUAL ACUITY:
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

4. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position performs the essential functions in an indoor office setting.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree

Coursework in Student Development Theory.
Experience in an Academic Advising Office.
Experience in a Community College.
Required Training  
Work Hours
40 hours per week when office is open, some weekends and additional evenings required.
General hours of operation:
Monday– Thursday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Extended hours during heavy enrollment periods.

Job Duties

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)
One on one interaction with advisees on a bi-weekly basis.
Find effective ways to assist each student with the goal of matriculation.
Effective student planning that promotes retention and degree completion.
Help facilitate a successful transition to OCCC.
Intentionally develop academic and social goals during each advising session.
Introduce college academic resources and various study techniques.
Referrals to available resources that can help the student overcome personal challenges.
Work one-on-one with students to create an action plan to address any issue(s) impeding their success.
Work collaboratively with all areas of the campus to increase opportunities for student achievement and to help students remove barriers they may encounter along their path to graduation.
Educates student on academic planning using the Student Planning software.
Identify student-specific barriers to graduation, strategize how to help a student overcome these barriers and create measurable student-specific activities to support successful completion of their program leading to graduation.
As part of the initial advising appointment we will introduce the student to the many financial opportunities we offer and help outline the student’s financial plan for college.
Stay current with federal, state, and college financial aid regulations, policies, and procedures to insure accuracy and compliance in delivery of services to students.
Effectively use interpersonal and communications skills including tact and diplomacy.
Interview and advise current and prospective students who are seeking information about financial assistance programs. This requires a comprehensive knowledge of all programs and specific eligibility criteria.
Review student satisfactory academic progress appeals, collect data about student’s academic performance, evaluate and make decisions pertaining to continued eligibility, notify the student, and update student’s electronic record.
Provide general office coverage and assist as needed with other duties.
Effectively use organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and follow through.

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation, shelter in place drills, and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
