In this exciting role, you will work on topics related to wide field optical transient surveys. C3 is working on both the La Silla Schmidt Southern Survey and the DOE's LSST-DESC carried out on the Rubin Observatory. Areas of interest are broad, including: development of new image differencing algorithms; platforms for managing observational data and markups by scientists; and automating the follow-up of interesting astrophysical objects. Ideal candidates would be capable of generating their own research ideas and have good programming skills.

Interactions with researchers from the UC Berkeley Astronomy department are encouraged, as well as those involving the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics (BCCP) and Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS). Berkeley Lab is a full member of several cosmology surveys, including DESI, LSST-DESC and CMB-S4. The postdoctoral researcher will have access to allocations on some of the world-leading supercomputers including Cori, Perlmutter (Berkeley/ NERSC), Theta (Argonne/ALCF) and Summit (Oakridge/OLCF). In addition, the postdoc will have access to future Exascale systems.

What You Will Do:

  • Become an essential member of a diverse team of cosmologists, applied mathematicians, and computer scientists, working together on furthering astrophysical surveys.
  • Publish and present research results in journals and conference proceedings.
  • Lead discoveries in transient astrophysics.
  • Organize follow-up strategies for the surveys.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Experience with High-Performance Computing in scientific context.

What is Required:

  • PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or equivalent/related field.
  • Experience with astrophysical surveys and transient astrophysics.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work productively both independently and as part of a diverse team.
  • Strong coding in Python

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with High Performance Computing.
  • Coding in C++ with experience in MPI and OpenMP.

Step 5 - $8,642/mo

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree and are predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
