About the Department

The Physics Department provides (1) High-quality Physics instruction to the University community through courses in introductory physics; (2) educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in physics through high-quality curricula, faculty, and research facilities; (3) outreach programs that advance scientific knowledge. Our research programs cover a diverse spectrum including astrophysics, general relativity, condensed matter theory and experiment, computational physics, biophysics, nanoscale science, physics education, experimental nuclear physics, particle and nuclear theory, experimental optics, and experimental atomic and molecular physics. The department enrolls approximately 120 graduate students and 140 undergrad physics majors. The department size is approximately 56 faculty members.

Essential Job Duties

This position will direct an internationally recognized and funded program of research in physics with an emphasis in the field of astrophysics and/or astronomy. It is expected the successful candidate will establish a highly competitive, independent research program that complements the department’s current strengths in this area. The research interests of current faculty include observational and theoretical/computational astrophysics: stellar astrophysics, gravitational physics, extragalactic astrophysics, and nuclear/neutrino astrophysics. 

In addition to directing a research program, the position holder is expected to:
  • Advise and direct undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-doctoral research associates in research leading to peer-reviewed publications;
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate classes at the standard departmental teaching load for research-active faculty; and
  • Provide service to the Department, University, and wider professional community in roles such as a committee member, referee, reviewer, adviser, officer, etc.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires PhD or equivalent degree in physics or a related field

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstration of independent research via invited talks and publication of articles in peer-reviewed professional journals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students and/or post-doctoral research associates. 
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate classes.
