The Department of Radiology has an outstanding opportunity for a Full-Time Medical physicist/MRI Scientist to join the Diagnostic Physics Section (DPS) (60%) and Diagnostic Imaging Sciences Center (DISC) (40%) at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA.

We are seeking a team-oriented individual with a commitment to excellence in clinical medical physics with a focus on MRI and interest/experience in MRI research. This is a joint position between DPS and DISC.

Diagnostics Physics Section (DPS):

The mission of the DPS is to ensure that patient images are of optimal diagnostic quality at appropriate radiation dose, maintain compliance with all regulating and certifying agency requirements, to assist physicians in making informed clinical decisions, and to provide education on physics principles that drive image quality and safety. The DPS consists of 5 physicists (2 faculty, 3 staff) and 1 medical physics assistant. This position in DPS at 60% effort includes clinical medical physics responsibilities at UW Medicine sites of practice, including the UW Medical Center (UWMC)-Montlake, UWMC-Northwest, Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. State-of-the-art digital imaging modalities, including radiography, fluoroscopy, mammography, ultrasound, multi-detector CT, MR, US and PACS are in place throughout the enterprise with PET-MR being installed shortly.

Diagnostic Imaging Sciences Center:
DISC is a self-supported cost-center providing cutting-edge resources for performing all types of MRIs on the research-dedicated 3T Philips Ingenia-Elition scanner. It supports researchers from various departments at UW and in the Seattle area, as well as around the country with their imaging needs, data storage and transfer facilities, and advises on image analyses pipelines. It consists of 1 technologist, 2 imaging scientists, a system administrator, and admin support.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
(Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.)

Clinical Medical Physics- Diagnostic Physics 60%
• Quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) programs for radiological imaging modalities and the support of American College of Radiology (ACR) modality accreditation efforts across all the sites
• Work with radiologists/physicians and technologists in the development of new imaging procedures and optimizing imaging techniques.
• Teach radiology residents and other UW students and staff/faculty.
• Collaborative engagement with stakeholders and vendors

Diagnostic Imaging Sciences Center – 40%
• Oversee technical support and quality assurance of the MRI research scanner.
• Develop improved protocols for structural and functional imaging to address the needs of the research studies. This will range from simple modifications of MRI protocols to pulse sequence programming and maintaining patches.
• Closely interact with DPS to maintain safety protocols at DISC to the latest standards and help safety-train study personnel.
• Interact with Philips, DPS, and research PIs to provide innovative, visionary, and collaborative insights to improve translatability of MRI research sequences and to keep DISC a cutting-edge research facility.
• Occasionally train postdoctoral fellows who may be interested in operating the scanner by themselves.
• Occasionally to present newest MRI methods and their potential applicability to DISC users.

Minimum Requirements
• Master's Degree in medical physics or related science
• 5 years of post-graduate diagnostic medial physics experience & in MR research – scanning and advanced pulse sequence design etc.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Proficiency with PC personal productivity tools including email, word processing, and spreadsheets
• Proven communication, planning, interpersonal, and analytical skills.

Desired Qualifications
• Ph.D. in medical physics or related sciences
• Experience in all diagnostic medical physics modalities is desirable

Supervision:
This position reports to Dr. Kanal – Director DPS and Dr. Levendovszky – Director DISC in the Radiology Department.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to speak or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to write, finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or carry phantoms up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Traveling to different sites is required.

Work Environment:
• Schedule is normally 8a to 5p, M-F but is not always fixed and workload does vary. For DPS duties, you may have to come in early or stay late depending on task and sometime but rarely come in on weekends for few hours. The incumbent¹s first responsibility is to complete tasks rather than keep to a fixed schedule.  Flexibility in schedule and intensity of work is necessary.
• Position is suitable for a hybrid/occasional telework
• Travel between sites will be necessary by UW Health Services or other shuttles.
