Position Summary
The Hermiston Agricultural Research Station invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.
Oregon State University’s Hermiston Agricultural Research & Extension Center (HAREC) located in Hermiston, Oregon provides support for over 500,000 acres of irrigated crop production in Umatilla and Morrow Counties as well as southern Washington State along the Columbia River in the lower Columbia Basin. This position will contribute to the mission of HAREC with primary responsibility of providing technical and scholarship support for the Potato Breeding & Genetics program at HAREC and OSU AES Crop & Soil Science Department in Corvallis.

Position Duties
40% Field Experiments:
Coordinates, manages and conducts all the field trials at Hermiston. Responsible for ordering appropriate supplies, selecting and properly using the most appropriate field equipment and methods for potato grading, crop management, harvest, data collection, compilation, analysis and preparation of field trial sites for educational tours and field days. Specific duties include:
  • Coordinate field experiments with research farm managers and commercial farm operators, assuring availability.
  • Regularly attend field meetings and plan field trials accordingly
  • Operate and calibrate equipment properly.
  • Maintain planting, harvest and grading equipment.
  • Purchase and prepare all products and supplies.
  • Prepare reports of all pesticides, including safe and legal use thereof.
  • Develop computer generated data management systems (entry of treatment lists, plot plans, planting plans, labels and data collection sheets).
  • Operate farm and plot sized equipment safely.
  • Design experimental plots, plot designs and protocols.
  • Collect data on disease ratings and plant development.
  • Perform all trial grading including yield, external and internal defects rating, specific gravity and fry quality
  • Recognize and report common pest problems encountered.
  • Apply pesticides, when necessary.

30% Other Research:
  • Coordinate with other Researchers/Research Assistants in the Potato Breeding and Variety Development Program in managing and conducting greenhouse experiments and crossings in the greenhouses.
  • Maintain greenhouses for crossing, seedling tuber production and other genetic research
  • Assist graduate students, post-doctoral students in their research activities
  • Maintain cleanliness of program related buildings, vehicles and other project related equipment
  • Perform pollen extraction, hybridizations and true potato seed extraction.
  • Assist PI in Molecular breeding and genomic selection

10% Lead work:
Direct temporary employees, as needed. This includes planning, assigning and approving work, along with hiring and firing or recommending such actions.
  • Administer seasonal labor requirements and daily work schedules of seasonal employees.

10% Program Coordination:
  • Prepare annual reports and present the results to the Project Leader and other members of the potato variety development program
  • Coordinate trial data and provide reports on national breeding trials in a timely manner
  • Assist the Project Leader to manage budgets for labor, travel, supplies and services and purchasing to remain within allowable expenditures.
  • Represent Oregon State University at Tri-state meetings

5% Research Reporting:
  • Author or co-author reports and peer reviewed publications on project work.
  • Prepare summaries of experiments and present information such as oral presentations or posters at field days and grower/industry meetings, as well as at local, regional and/or national industry/professional peer meetings.
  • Tabulate and analyze data (for publication on project website, in project publications and peer reviewed publications).

5% Service & Outreach:
  • Interact with other staff, faculty, growers and other stakeholders to promote efficient research and relationships.
  • Participate in local and regional industry meetings, professional societies, departmental committees and other activities.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
BS degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Plant Science, Horticulture or a related field.
Must possess or be able to obtain an Oregon Public Applicator’s License and demonstration/research pesticide applicator’s license within Three (3) months of employment and maintain throughout period of employment.
Must possess or be able to obtain a farm endorsement within six (6) months of employment and maintain throughout the period of employment.
Experience in operating farm or research-scale equipment.
Experience working with Horticultural crops
Ability to lift, carry and pull objects up to 50 pounds and, occasionally, objects weighing more.
Experience in commercial or research field crop management.
Experience with computer spreadsheet and word processing programs.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others.
Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills.
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OAR 125-155-0200) as per OAR 576-056-0000 et seq.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
MS degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Plant Science, Horticulture or a related field.
Experience in potato or plant breeding.
Experience in potato/vegetable production.
Experience in molecular breeding and use of statistical and genetic tools
Experience towing trailers and hauling equipment.
Experience in management of field crop production and research.
Experience with field research techniques including plot design, maintenance and evaluation of field plots, seed processing, data collection and analysis and library research.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position involves field, greenhouse, laboratory and office work. Work schedules can vary dramatically depending on seasonal needs. Work outside of an 8-5 work day is not uncommon especially in the spring for planting and during harvest in the fall. Field and greenhouse work can be under temperature extremes. Field work may involve exposure to dusty, allergen-laden conditions.
Hard physical activity involving lifting, pushing, and pulling objects weighing up to 50 lbs., and on some occasions, more than 50 lbs. Will operate university vehicles such as tractors, agricultural machinery, passenger vehicles and fork lift. Enter restricted areas such as confined spaces, biological laboratories and construction sites. Performs agricultural chemical applications (fungicide, herbicide, pesticide). Respirator or dust mask and other required protective equipment used as necessary
