Summary of Duties:

The Baylink laboratory at Washington State University works in collaboration with gastroenterologists and industry partners to translate cutting-edge laboratory research on bacterial pathogens into real-world improvements in human health, such as novel strategies for antibacterial medicines.

As a postdoctoral researcher in the Baylink lab, you will lead investigations into novel drug targets identified through our research on gastrointestinal pathogens. A current area of focus is the human gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori . H. pylori is classified by the World Health Organization as a ‘priority pathogen’ and poses an immense public health burden. The bacteria infect approximately half of the world’s population and are a causative agent of stomach ulcers and cancers. The pathogen’s inherent resistance to clearance, and rising antibiotic resistance, limits clinical treatment options.

Our lab has identified key protein systems that allow H. pylori to locate and colonize injured regions of the stomach and exacerbate tissue damage. We hypothesize this response is at least partially mediated through protein receptors that detect chemicals present in blood/serum, directing a chemoattraction (i.e. directed flagellar-based motility) response to sources of bleeding and damaged tissue. Among our research goals are to obtain the first structural insights into these key protein receptors and begin to identify small molecular inhibitors through structure-based drug discovery that could be used to disorient the bacterium and alleviate persistent infections.

This position is a fantastic opportunity for individuals looking to pursue a career in infectious disease and translational research. As a postdoctoral researcher in the Baylink lab, you will have a large degree of autonomy to drive research progress and address impactful questions relating to gastroenterology, antibacterial discovery, and enteric pathogens.
