Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions at Biocomplexity Institute at the University of Virginia

Job Description

The Network Systems Science & Advanced Computing (NSSAC) Division of the Biocomplexity Institute at the University of Virginia is seeking several motivated, enthusiastic, self-driven candidates for a variety of Postdoctoral Research Associate positions. The incumbents will join the Contagion Science and Technology Program, a prestigious new strategic research initiative funded by the University of Virginia through its Prominence-to-Preeminence STEM Targeted Initiatives Fund. The Institute serves as the program’s organizing unit with broad and comprehensive partnership of the University of Virginia Schools of Engineering and Applied Science, Data Science, Medicine, and the College of Arts & Sciences.

The incumbents will have unique opportunities to explore applications of computing and data sciences at the interfaces of different scientific disciplines, ranging from epidemiological modeling and health sciences (e.g. infectious disease, public health policy; modeling and simulations) to computer and network system sciences (e.g. multidisciplinary data science and/or machine learning or graph modeling and mining), to computational social sciences (e.g. social epidemiology; diffusion/containment of behaviors/information in large social networks).

Co-mentorship by experienced principal investigators from the Biocomplexity Institute and its UVA partners will provide unique interdisciplinary working and learning environments.

The new Contagion Science team member will contribute to the creation and promulgation of research that leverages new and existing theoretical, engineering, and data science tools for the modeling of contagious phenomena. Research emphasis will be on techniques that integrate information across multiple resolutions of societal and biological organization. Strong candidates must show interdisciplinary research proficiency at the intersection of epidemiology, pathogen genomics, and public health. The ideas developed as a part of this program are expected to support the development of theories for understanding large-scale networked complex systems.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: participating in unique learning and professional development experiences including the creation of research themes for the research roadmap; leading organization of workshops and other program relevant meetings; and, supporting the collaboration of existing and potential program partners such as, government agencies, industries, and researchers. This collective exposure allows Postdoctoral Research Associate to gain experience in effective engagement and project management with the research community.
