The Hussman Institute is currently seeking a full time Post Doctoral Associate to work in Miami. The Post Doctoral Associate performs scientific research and studies under the supervision of managing staff. Moreover, the Post Doctoral Associate promotes institutional recognition through literal contributions to the scientific community.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                             

  • Conducts research on specific areas of study as assigned.

  • Prepares research reports and technical papers for publishing.

  • Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories.

  • Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.

  • Develops advanced analytical models and systems and provides solutions and analyses to support strategic and tactical decisions.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

  • The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research on Alzheimer Disease. 

  • Molecular biology techniques to include, but are not limited to PCR, cloning, and tissue culture. In addition isolation and manipulation of RNA including RNA extraction, RT-PCR, and quantitative real-time PCR are performed routinely.

  • Ascertain, collect Blood for DNA, iPSC, and RNA and clinical data on Alzheimer’s disease patients and their families.

  • Maintain and expand iPSC lines and differentiation into AD relevant cell types, including neurons, astrocytes, and microglia for functional and genomic characterization.

  • Collect information and data through observation, experimentation and various other methods, to include operating highly technical laboratory instruments and equipment. 

  • Analyze sequencing data from large sample sets. 

  • Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular equipment as required. 

  • Review journals, abstracts and scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments and to obtain information regarding previous experiments to aid in the design and development of original procedures and techniques. 

  • Supervise, train and instruct residents, interns, students or lower level personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures. 

  • Present research findings at lab meetings and conferences.

Department Specific Functions

CORE QUALIFICATIONS  

       Qualifications:

  • PhD with demonstrable experience in one of the following areas: bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, functional genomics

  • Working proficiency in appropriate programming languages and software (eg. R, Python)

  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills as demonstrated by publication record

  • Experience in one of the following topics is strongly suggested: broad bioinformatics experience with a good working knowledge of genomics / transcriptomics / epi-transcriptomics / single cell analysis / high throughput sequencing data processing

  • Experience in working with deadlines and being involved in multiple projects simultaneously

  • High intrinsic motivation and strong scientific curiosity

  • Ability to be inventive and to present novel ideas in method development and application, data analysis and interpretation

  • Team player that can work independently in a multidisciplinary team

  • Proactive, flexible, and problem-solving attitude
