Job Description


The Kuyumcu-Martinez lab in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks applicants for Research Associate positions.

The Kuyumcu-Martinez lab has several projects to determine how specific RNA binding proteins regulate pre-mRNA splicing and polyadenylation in the heart and how dysregulation of these RNA binding proteins leads to adult and congenital heart diseases. The projects involve multipronged approaches including state of the art RNA-sequencing methods using primary cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, induced pluripotent stem cells and/or mouse models of heart disease and development. 

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

  • Familiarity with molecular science software; education in either : 1) an appropriate application domain (biophysics, etc.) or 2) computer science/computer engineering.

  • Excellent prior productivity in scientific and software outputs, as demonstrated by publications, contributions to scientific software projects, etc.

  • Familiarity with modern open-source software engineering practices and tools (github, continuous integration, etc).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The selected applicant will be required to complete a background check and health screen prior to their first day of employment per university policy.

This is a restricted position and continuation is dependent on the availability of funding and satisfactory performance
