The Critical Materials Institute with the Ames National Laboratory is searching for a qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate.

This postdoctoral researcher will design, discover characterize magnetic materials.  The researcher will grow single crystals and synthesize polycrystalline examples of known crystal structures as well as search for new compounds. The researcher will also perform induction casting, rapid solidification, compaction, magnetic and thermal optimization of permanent magnet materials. The researcher via temperature and field dependent thermodynamic and transport measurements will characterize samples. The researcher will collaborate with experts in band structure computation.  The researcher will analyze and plot data, write drafts of journal articles and make oral presentations of completed and planned research.  The researcher will participate in the development, building and maintenance of growth and characterization equipment.

The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and will be expected to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences. The initial appointment will be one year, with renewal appointments based on annual performance assessments and availability of funds.


Required Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in experimental Condensed Matter Physics, Solid State Chemistry, Materials Science, or related fields.


Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in synthesis of materials.

Experience in synthesis and processing of permanent magnet materials.

Experience in the use of single crystal and powder x-ray diffraction equipment.

Experience in X-ray structural and phase analysis.

Experience in metallographic sample preparation and scanning electron microscopy.

Experience in calorimetry measurements (DSC, DTA), magnetic measurements (M/H, M/T), the measurement of temperature dependent thermodynamic and/or transport properties such as magnetization, specific heat, thermal expansion, electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, Hall effect, and thermal conductivity.

Demonstrated experience in writing of scientific papers and communicating research results via oral presentation in English.
