JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State University Hershey Medical Center (PSHMC) located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, is a comprehensive medical facility comprised of 2 hospitals (University Hospital and Children's Hospital) and 6 institutes: Penn State Cancer Institute, Heart and Vascular Institute, Bone and Joint Institute, Neuroscience Institute, Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and Institute for Personalized Medicine. Multiple programs have earned distinguished reputations. 


The Postdoctoral Clinical Chemistry Fellowship Program is one of several fellowship programs offered by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at PSHMC and requires two years for completion. The fellows will rotate in the clinical chemistry laboratory and pathology core reference laboratory at PSHMC. 


The Clinical Chemistry Laboratory is a full-service laboratory including general chemistry, immunoassays, therapeutic drug monitoring, and special chemistry. The laboratory is equipped with Vitros 4600, Vitros 5600, Architect i1000, Architect i2000 , lmmulite 2000 XPi, Tosoh G8, Capillarys II, Capillarys II FLEX, Hydrasys, Adeza Tli, Brookfield Viscometer, IL GEM Premier 4000 blood gas analyzers. The Clinical Chemistry Laboratory provides performs over four million tests per year with more than 180 assays in our test menu. 


The Pathology Core Reference Lab is a CUA-certified, fully accredited reference laboratory that specializes in the quantitative analysis of hormones, hormone receptors, cytokines and growth factors from both human subjects and experimental animals. The lab performs these tests for both diagnostic and investigative research purposes for PSHMC and a number of community hospitals, and contracts its services for specialized testing to numerous university medical centers, institutes and pharmaceutical companies. The lab equipment includes Agilent 6460 QQQ Mass Spectrometer, Waters Alliance HPLC System, Abbott Architect Immunoassay analyzers, Binding Site SPA Plus Turbidimetric Analyzer, BioTek EPOCH Microplate Reader, ISOMEDIC Gamma Counter, Beckman Coulter LS6500 Multipurpose Scintillation Counter, and Perkin Elmer 2470 Gamma Counter. 
In addition to Clinical Chemistry and Pathology Core Reference Laboratories, the fellows will have elective rotations in molecular pathology, microbiology, virology, hematology, HLA laboratories, blood bank, and informatics. The trainees are not only trained in clinical services, but also in research, laboratory management, and teaching. 
Requirements: All applicants should have earned a doctoral degree at accredited institutions. Individuals with doctoral degrees in Chemistry-related fields or Medicine are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants possessing an M.D. degree must be diplomates of the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology or have met the requirements to take the Board examination. Candidates should have met 30 semester hours minimum requirement of undergraduate and/or graduate level biochemistry or chemistry courses. Applicants with education obtained at institutions outside the U.S. or Canada must, at their expense, have their credentials evaluated by the International Education Research Foundation,  Inc., or acceptable equivalent. Applicants should have strong interests in laboratory medicine and research. Excellent communication and personal-interaction skills are required. 


Stipends: Commensurate with postgraduate training and experience.

This is a limited-term non-tenure line position funded for one year from date of hire, with possibility of refunding.
