Job Description

Classification Title:

Research Scientist

Job Description:

The Center for Molecular Magnetic Quantum Materials (M2 QM) at the University of Florida is seeking a Research Scientist. M2 QM (https://efrc.ufl.edu/ ) is a renewed (Aug. 1, 2022) Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the US Department of Energy; See https://science.osti.gov/-/media/bes/pdf/awards/EFRC-awards-sheet-8-25.pdf . This is a twelve-month, time-limited, non-tenure-accruing position, beginning in Spring 2023.

The Center focuses on the science of molecule-based magnetic systems as the basis for their application in next-generation quantum technologies. The Center programs ranges from the synthesis and characterization of these emergent new materials to a systematic computational understanding of their many-body quantum behavior. The fundamental science of the M2 QM aims to address the two primary technological challenges: 1) how to create qubits for intrinsically quantum computing, and 2) how to replace elements of traditional computers and sensors with intrinsically quantum, molecule-based devices that are energy efficient as well as fast and adaptive. In this setting, reliable, swift, all-electron calculations of magnetically complex materials are crucial.

The Research Scientist will work on spin transitions and magnetoelectric couplings in molecular magnetic systems, dynamics and decoherence of spin and clock transition, spin-spin couplings, spin-environment interactions in junctions, simulation of inelastic tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) etc.

The Research Scientist will have the title of operating director and is also expected to work on annual Center reports, organization of all-hands meetings (twice a year) etc. Good writing, communication, and organization skills are required.

This position is tenable for up to four years depending upon significant achievement, satisfactory job performance in operating, and mutual interest. All research scientists are expected to interact with other M2 QM members and help advise students.

The Center for Molecular Magnetic Quantum Materials particularly welcomes applicants who can contribute to a diverse and inclusive environment through their scholarship, teaching, mentoring, and professional service. Please see https://diversity.clas.ufl.edu/diversity-statement/ for more information about diversity and inclusion in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The university and greater Gainesville communities enjoy a diversity of cultural events, restaurants, year-round outdoor recreational activities, and social opportunities.

Expected Salary: The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes a full benefits package.
Minimum Requirements:

Successful candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a close area, and postdoctoral research experience is expected.

Good writing, communication, and organization skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in DFT and beyond DFT methods, high-level quantum chemistry, machine learning, high-throughput modeling of complex materials, model Hamiltonian-based spin dynamics, or in IETS is a plus.

Postdoctoral research experience is expected

Special Instructions to Applicants:

For full consideration, applications must be submitted online. Click on Apply Now at the top of this posting. A complete application includes (1) a letter of application summarizing the applicant's qualifications, interests, and suitability for the position, (2) a complete curriculum vitae (including publication list), (3) a research statement and goals, and (4) the names and email addresses of three references must be provided. An email will be sent to your references, requesting them to upload their confidential letter to the submission packet.

Applications will be reviewed beginning January 3, 2023, and the position will remain open until filled. Only complete applications will be reviewed at this time. Applications received after this date may be considered at the discretion of the committee and/or hiring authority.

All candidates for employment are subject to a pre-employment screening which includes a review of criminal records, reference checks, and verification of education.

Final candidate will be required to provide official transcript to the hiring department upon hire.  A transcript will not be considered “official” if a designation of “Issued to Student” is visible.  Degrees earned from an education institution outside of the United States are required to be evaluated by a professional credentialing service provider approved by National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), which can be found at http://www.naces.org/ .

The University of Florida is an equal opportunity institution dedicated to building a broadly diverse and inclusive faculty and staff.

The University of Florida is An Equal Employment Opportunity Institution.
