Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Department of Geographical Sciences (GEOG) is seeking a Financial Associate to assist with contract and grant administration (both pre- and post-award). This position is a 12-month, full-time status. This position offers excellent benefits, including but not limited to health insurance, generous leave package from the first year (accrued at 22 days-annual leave, 3 days-personal leave & 14 days-sick leave), retirement subsidy (ORP/Pension System), tuition remission and many professional development opportunities. The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at low $60,000s to mid $70,000s per year. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This position is also hybrid telework-eligible. GEOG promotes growth in individuals and a healthy work-life balance within a collaborative culture.

GEOG conducts research to advance an integrated understanding of the Earth and spatially distributed human processes, especially at the interface between the human and natural systems. These research projects are funded by many different funding agencies with different regulations and reporting requirements. A group of exceptionally talented, bright, and dedicated research coordinators work very closely with our faculty to ensure the success of their research projects.

This position will be a member of an administrative team of an Associate Director of Research and an experienced team of Financial Research Coordinators. The Financial Associate will assist the Associate Director of Research in the fiscal management of a multidisciplinary research portfolio. Duties will include:
  • Assist faculty members to develop the proposal budget and facilitate submission in sponsor-specific systems such as grants.gov, research.gov etc.
  • Review and reconcile grant expenditures in accordance with the budget.
  • Provide periodic financial summaries of their research portfolio to faculty.
  • Monitor account activities for compliance and end-date and notify faculty in advance as well as recommend solutions to any foreseeable complications.
  • Assist Associate Director of Research and principal investigators with sponsored research account close-out processes.
  • Assist with travel arrangements and logistical planning of scientific fieldwork to ensure that the travel requests and corresponding expense statements are properly and correctly prepared.
  • Liaison with other campus departments in management of the research portfolio.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience:
Accounting or fiscal experience required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Experience with excel.
  • Ability to handle multiple, sometimes competing priorities will be sought in successful candidates.
  • Proactive with an analytical mind with customer centric attitude.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Grant management experience, including proposal development, in an academic environment is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with federal regulations including Uniform Guidance and the FARs, and with UMD administrative systems including KR, KFS and BA4, policies, and procedures are desired but not required.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Documents, Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets, and Adobe Acrobat PDF is preferred.
