Postdoctoral Research Associate

Northeastern University

Job Description

About the Opportunity

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities
is a leader in the Experiential Liberal Arts. The College is strongly committed to fostering excellence through diversity and enthusiastically welcomes applications from members of groups underrepresented in higher education administration.

Responsibilities:
Join the Boston Area Research Initiative (BARI) at Northeastern University! BARI advances place-based, civically-engaged research that leverages a robust use of data to benefit local communities. We are adding a postdoc who will help to design and lead our growing efforts to create racial equity in urban informatics education (i.e., data science focused on understanding and supporting local communities). These programs are especially focused on advancing economic and civic inclusion in urban informatics by making these skills and the broader industry accessible to historically marginalized communities. The curricula are targeted for both young people, enabling them to pursue entry-level job opportunities in the field, and representatives from non-profits, expanding their capacity to incorporate data into their planning and advocacy.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will focus especially on an expanded educational program for young people looking to gain the skills of data science. Working within an existing team, areas of activity will include, but will not be limited to: development of new curricula that make the skills of urban informatics accessible to young people; delivering trainings and other educational sessions to both young people and community organizations; supporting graduates of these programs working in data-oriented internships and jobs; managing relationships with program partners on current and future collaboration; contributing to design and leadership of the broader educational program and its supports; and helping manage the work of BARI’s research team to maintain the Boston Data Portal and incorporate its data contents into the educational program. Appointment will be for one year with the possibility of extension, contingent on available funds.

The position will be a core member of BARI’s multigenerational research team, which consists of faculty, postdocs, PhD, Masters, and undergraduate students and is led by Director Dan O’Brien, and will have co-affiliations with the other partners.

Qualifications:
Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent; be able to undertake full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar.
Must have experience with the skills of data science or urban informatics, including using R statistical software. Experience teaching or otherwise working with youth from marginalized backgrounds also valuable. The ideal candidate must be able to handle complexity in a fast-paced environment. Must possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; strong initiative; the ability to think creatively; comfort with public speaking; and a commitment to advancing racial equity and social justice.
