Intercultural Family Services, Inc.

Intercultural Family Services, (Intercultural), is partnering with Bob Madonna, (Diversified Services LLC) on a search for a President & Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) to lead a thriving, community-centric, nonprofit in Philadelphia, PA.

Intercultural Family Services believes that every Philadelphian deserves the opportunity to thrive. For more than 40 years, we have supported in inherent strength children, strong families, and communities by increasing access to quality clinical behavioral health, community-based, and prevention programs for children and families. Since its founding, Intercultural has strategically expanded its focus and footprint and operates from offices in South, Northeast, and West Philadelphia where the organization is building a new 36,000 square foot headquarters and services center.

Intercultural Family Services works to achieve the promise of a truly equitable Philadelphia Region through an array of services:

  • Intensive Home and School Based Services
  • Intercultural’s Family Based Mental Health Services, Intensive Behavioral Health Services in schools, and Family Functional Therapy programs offer intensive, evidenced based, and team-delivered supports for youth and families as appropriate to their need and located in their home and community.
  • Behavioral Health Centers/Outpatient Services
  • The agency’s two licensed behavioral health clinics, located in West and South Philadelphia, provide therapeutic services to individuals and families to treat anxiety, depression and other mental health issues that negatively impact their health, safety, and stability. Services are offered both in person and via remote modalities.
  • Truancy Prevention Services
  • Truancy Prevention Service is the newest and now largest program at Intercultural. This program supports children in need before they have the 10 absences that put them at risk for involvement by the Regional Truancy Court.
  • Prevention and Community Enrichment Programs
  • Intercultural’s Family Empowerment services help sustain strong families by providing the supports necessary to prevent crisis and promote health. Intercultural’s Healthy Start program works with mothers and fathers to ensure a healthy and promising early childhood for growing families. Intercultural’s Parenting Skills program provides multilingual training to parents navigating children at multiple stages of development.
  • Housing Counseling Services
  • Intercultural’s Housing Counseling Program has been successful in encouraging and assisting participants to become - and importantly – remain homeowners, to enhance their home management skills, to sustain their family in a stable housing environment.

Leadership Opportunity

The CEO will bring a record of bold leadership to effectively deliver an inspiring vision: that every Philadelphian deserves the opportunity to thrive. The CEO is responsible for articulating Intercultural’s mission, identifying and prioritizing goals outlined in its strategic plan, maintaining an expansive network of partners, and setting local and regional agendas for thought leadership and advocacy.

The CEO will join an organization with a clear vision and mission, strong financial position, and a purposeful course of action. As they guide the delivery of this community-driven plan, the CEO will pursue and innovate our current internal practices that advance an equity-focused team culture. Through community-based hiring, personal and professional development, and rewarding compensation packages, the CEO will build on the agency’s track record of success with sustaining talent and will exemplify the agency’s tagline Diversity in Action.

The CEO reports to and works in partnership with a Board of Directors, comprised of influential community and civic leaders. The Board fulfills its fiduciary responsibilities through six board meetings a year, active committee participation, and resource development efforts. The CEO leads a staff of115 employees and more than 100 contractors and works closely with a senior leadership team of seven. Theirdirect reports include the Deputy Executive Director, Medical Director, Director of Intensive Clinical Services, Senior Accountant, Outpatient Clinic Supervisors, and Director of Quality Assurance.

Intercultural is a fiscally-sound nonprofit with a projected FY23 budget of $9.5 million, two-thirds of which is generated by fee-for-service arrangements with Community Behavioral Health (CBH), one-third of which is generated through contracts with Philadelphia Department of Human Services, and a small amount of which is generated from other funding partnerships and fundraising.

The President and CEO’s key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Community-Centered Leadership

  • Champion, steward, and deliver a strategic direction based on a collective and community-driven vision for Intercultural.
  • In partnership with the staff and Board, set annual targets, business plans, and measurable key performance indicators, (KPIs) that aid a strategy for economic mobility and community self-determination.
  • Direct thought leadership, testimony, and advocacy that connect Intercultural’s successful direct services model to local and national policy changes that advance economic mobility for families experiencing generational poverty.
  • Facilitate the governance work of the Board of Directors by assisting the executive committee with the development of annual Board workplans, reporting on programmatic and operational effectiveness, and leveraging Board efforts to raise resources and visibility that extend Intercultural’s presence in local and regional circles.

Champion a Diverse and Values-Driven Team Culture

  • Inspire a team culture that values respect, compassion, teamwork, and accountability.
  • Supervise, encourage, and develop the performance of the senior leadership team. Mentor employees to encourage professional growth, creative approaches, and effective teamwork.
  • Define effective decision-making practices and clear communications that align staff across different departments, increase belonging, and facilitate transparent working relationships.
  • Set a bold agenda for internal racial equity and justice practices that maintain a diverse and inclusive workforce across race, gender, socioeconomics, ability, and sexual orientation.

Raise Organizational Profile and Resources

  • Represent and promote Intercultural’s mission, programs, and outcomes to media outlets, partners, policymakers, and sponsors.
  • Identify opportunities, strategies, and partnerships that expand and enhance Intercultural’s programs, priorities, and community supports.
  • Lead the effort to establish development practices, to maintain and grow supporters by liaising with funders and donors, envisioning new revenue-based partnerships, and ensuring grant proposals and reports reflect the organization's vision, values, and outcomes.

Implement Long-Term Infrastructure Strategies

  • Ensure operations prioritize efficiency, safety, and compliance. Follow legal and regulatory guidance for government contracts, advance progressive human resource functions, safeguard facilities management practices, and invest in information technology systems and training that help Intercultural and its staff operate at high levels.
  • Maintain positive credentialing relationships with Council on Accreditation (COA), local/statewide elected and appointed leaders, state agencies, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Envision and plan investments in systems, processes, tools, and technologies necessary for an organization of Intercultural’s size and complexity.
  • Conduct regular review of key performance indicators that track costs, progress, and intended outcomes towards long-term goals, while directing course corrections as needed.
  • Guide finance team to prepare budgets integrating departmental priorities, monitor income and expenses, support long-range planning, and provide the Board with regular reports.

Experiences, Skills, and Qualities

The Board is seeking a skilled executive who brings a record of successful senior leadership experiences to this role. We recognize that the most competitive applicants will have many, but likely not all, of the following personal and professional experiences, skills, and qualities:

  • 10+ years in leadership roles in one or more nonprofit, government agency, or similarly complex entities.
  • Master’s Degree preferred; Bachelor’s degree required
  • Passion for Intercultural Family Services mission, with advanced understanding of issues, trends, and policies affecting mental health, education, community development, and economic mobility.
  • A significant supervisory record; experience mentoring and developing other senior leaders.
  • A strong record managing finance and operations within a complex, multi-million-dollar entity. A command of core functions of budgeting, financial management, human resources, contract negotiations, and external communications.
  • Comfort in a highly visible role. A credible reputation and strong public presence; an effective and influential communicator in public settings and personal conversations.
  • Committed to collective leadership and community co-ownership of organizational strategy.
  • Nuanced and intersectional understanding of equity, racial justice, and structural racism.
  • Proven ability to build effective and respectful relationships with people of various backgrounds, opinions, and perceptions. Demonstrates deep respect and understanding of Intercultural Family Services’ role as a true and trusted neighbor.
  • Talent for building consensus through strong emotional intelligence, super listening skills, and deep compassion. Leads teams with empathy, equity, dignity, and respect.
  • A successful record implementing strategy and setting goal frameworks, action-oriented budgets, and outcome measurements.
  • Accomplished with senior level fundraising efforts, including strategizing, and securing support through partnerships, institutions, corporations, and/or individuals.
  • Prior experience working with or serving on a nonprofit board; understanding of nonprofit governance and fiduciary responsibilities; fosters dialogue between board and leadership.
  • Local ties, including current or past record of personal and/or professional connections in related fields in the Philadelphia Region.

Location

Intercultural Family Services operates in Philadelphia, PA. Administrative offices are at 4225 Chestnut Street Philadelphia PA 19104. Travel between sites is required therefore a valid travel license is required.

Compensation

The annual base salary for this role begins at $180,000 with a competitive benefits package.
