Overview:
Sterling College in Vermont seeks as its next President a highly committed, mission-focused lover of the natural world to lead this unique learning community to its next level of financial security and student success through strategic vision; transparent leadership; and the passionate articulation of its mission. Located in Craftsbury Common in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, Sterling is one of only ten institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a Work College.

An anti-racist and anti-bias community focused on promoting equity and justice, Sterling College advances ecological thinking and action through affordable experiential learning that prepares people to be knowledgeable, skilled, and responsible leaders in the communities in which they live. A Sterling education is fundamentally experiential and place-based in character, with the natural world as the primary classroom, laboratory, and research setting.

The College embraces the attributes that make it unique – a close community, rural location, experiential education in the outdoors, and real work. With a full-time undergraduate enrollment of approximately 125, a 7:1 student to teacher ratio, and 18 full-time faculty who embody Sterling’s mission of ecological thinking and action, the Sterling community engages in compelling and meaningful learning experiences to care for the campus, each other, and the natural world.

The next President for Sterling College will be a highly collaborative visionary, innovative, student-centered, and entrepreneurial leader. Key strategic opportunities include:
  • Passionately, clearly, and consistently articulating Sterling’s unique mission, vision, identity, and impact to external audiences.
  • Strengthening the College’s financial position and increasing revenue through enrollment growth and the identification and creation of new academic programs and initiatives.
  • Strategically aligning Sterling’s future within the rapidly changing landscape of higher education while adhering to its unique mission and values.
  • Leading the College into a new era of fundraising, including developing and expanding partnerships with non-profits and foundations that share Sterling’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the natural world.
  • Upholding Sterling College as a welcoming and inclusive community in which to learn, work, and live; strengthening the College’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student body.
