Postdoctoral Associate, Computational Injury Bi...

Job Description

About University at Albany:

Established in 1844 and designated a University Center of the State University of New York in 1962, the University at Albany's broad mission of excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, research and public service engages a diverse student body of more than 17,900 students in nine schools and colleges across three campuses.

Located in Albany, New York, New York State's capital, the University is convenient to Boston, New York City and the Adirondacks.

Job Description:

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to support continuing research activities related to neonatal and maternal injury biomechanics that occur due to the birth process.  Dr. Michele Grimm joined the University at Albany in 2022 as Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  She has previously developed an internationally recognized research program that has developed rigid body models of the neonatal response to childbirth, with a particular focus on neonatal brachial plexus palsy.  She is looking to continue collaborations with obstetricians and experimental biomedical engineering laboratories so that the models can be expanded to investigate the mechanisms of both neonatal and maternal injuries that occur during the birth process.  She currently has two doctoral students working on projects under this umbrella, and she seeks a postdoctoral research associate to develop an integrated model and advance the overall project.

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Troubleshooting existing models, with students and independently, to support model advancement
  • Developing new models based on ranges of anatomical data and tissue properties
  • Identifying existing data that can be used to support model validation
  • Conducting literature searches to fully understand the current knowledge in the field
  • Writing scientific papers for peer-reviewed journals and presenting results at scientific conferences
  • Mentor graduate students and potential undergraduate students

Periods of remote work may be negotiated.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:  Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or mechanical engineering.  Candidates must have strong oral and written communication skills.  Candidates are expected to work well in a team setting, be self-motivated, and have experience working with diverse groups of students and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:  Candidates with experience as a graduate student or prior to graduate school in modeling of tissue and structural response to loading (e.g. FEA, rigid body modeling) are preferred.  Modeling platforms currently used include MADYMO (Siemens), Hypermesh (Altair), LS-Dyna, and Abacus (Dassault Systemes).

Additional Information:

Professional Rank and Salary Range: Postdoctoral Associate, SL1

Start Date: Negotiable (initial hire for one year).
