Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland School of Music invites applications for the position of Associate or Full Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies and Contemporary Improvisation. The successful candidate will be an innovative, dynamic and dedicated musician, educator and leader who can develop the University of Maryland’s existing program in Jazz Studies and work collaboratively to integrate contemporary improvisational thinking and performance throughout the School of Music. Preference will be given to candidates whose areas of performance, composition or arranging complement those of the existing faculty and who have an established national reputation in jazz and improvisational music.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively to manage the program’s annual budget, curriculum and teaching assignments. Classroom responsibilities may include applied lessons, large ensemble direction, small group coaching (including coaching of the new Graduate Jazz Fellowship Ensemble), and the teaching of courses in other areas of interest (improvisation, music business, jazz history, jazz theory, arranging and other areas as appropriate). The successful candidate will maintain an active and visible professional profile; expand on a record of success in recruiting excellent and diverse undergraduate and graduate students; mentor graduate students; build professional relationships with regional and national jazz institutions; cultivate a healthy learning environment for faculty, staff and students; and take part in a culture of service to the School of Music, College of Arts and Humanities and University.

Minimum Qualifications:

Evidence of excellence in performance, teaching and advising. Demonstrated commitment to and expertise in the interaction between improvisational thinking and musical traditions beyond the jazz canon.

Preference will be given to candidates whose areas of performance, composition or arranging complement those of the existing faculty and who have an established national reputation in jazz and improvisational music.
