Position Summary
Portland State University (PSU) seeks a Vice President for Research & Graduate Studies (VP for RGS) to expand PSU’s research capacity and increase the impact of the University’s scholarly and creative work on a local, national, and global scale. The following units report directly to the VP for RGS: Sponsored Projects Administration, Research Integrity & Compliance, the Graduate School, which oversees graduate studies at PSU, and Propel PSU, which includes the Innovation & Intellectual Property unit (PSU’s technology transfer and patent agreements office), PSU’s Center for Entrepreneurship, and the Portland State Business Accelerator. Six University Centers and Institutes also report directly to the VP for Research & Graduate Studies: The Transportation Research and Education Center (TREC), the Homelessness Research and Action Collaborative (HRAC), the Center for Interdisciplinary Mentoring Research (CIMR), the Institute for Sustainable Solutions (ISS), the Digital City Testbed Center (DCTC), and the Center for Electron Microscopy and Nanofabrication (CEMN).

With about $60 million in annual research expenditures, PSU has grown over the past 20 years into a thriving urban-serving research university with notable strengths in the areas of education, sustainability, health and life sciences, engineering, urban planning, visual, performing and built arts, and social work. Working with a dedicated research administration team and with the Vice President for Finance and Administration, the VP for RGS will further forge PSU’s identity as a nationally and internationally renowned research university. The VP for RGS will accomplish this goal by strengthening and refining relationships, as well as an administrative infrastructure that promotes cutting-edge research and scholarship while reducing the burden of grants administration on faculty. The VPR will also work closely with the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the deans of the schools and colleges, and with individual faculty members across campus, to promote a culture that rewards, incentivizes, and invests in high-impact scholarly and creative activities.

Expanding research, scholarship and creative work is a core strategic goal of the University, particularly as it enhances and supports equity and inclusion, student success, and service to the City of Portland. The new VP for RGS will oversee the development of a strategic plan for research at PSU that includes expanding opportunities for partnership and collaboration with OHSU, other Oregon universities, and global partner institutions. Ideally, this plan will also foster cross-disciplinary research work that stimulates and incentivizes faculty creativity, and it will support technology transfer and other means of bringing innovations developed at PSU beyond the University. In alignment with the University’s strategic priorities, the VP for RGS will also implement effective measures to increase the diversity of the RGS department’s staff, advance racial equity and equity in research practice at PSU, and advance public-impact research and community-engaged research, including that which fosters equity and justice in the Portland region.

In addition to this critical work within PSU and the Portland Metro Area, the VP for RGS works with the Government Relations staff at PSU and the Vice Presidents for Research at other major research universities in Oregon to highlight the essential ways in which research, scholarship, and creative activities contribute to Oregon’s vibrant, thriving economy, and to its cultural well-being.
