Summary

This position falls under the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering - Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and is part of the Michigan Engineering Zone (MEZ), located in midtown Detroit. This role will support the MEZ mission to increase STEM learning opportunities in Southeast Michigan by leading high school students through hands-on engineering activities virtually and in-person. Teachers and other professionals interested in STE(A)M education, learning technologies, informal learning environments, project-based and interdisciplinary learning should apply.

Responsibilities*

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and support for MEZ students and families. Maintain communication with MEZ students, teachers, and parents through email, social media, and texting service. Check-in regularly with student participants to determine needed wrap-around services, including access to transportation, food, and programming materials.
  • Create, collect, organize, and analyze student data, both during and after MEZ participation. Generate student and program data reports to analyze progress towards goals, identify areas of need, and report out to funders/stakeholders.
  • Develop and execute programming efforts related to student mental health, social and emotional development, and post-secondary planning. Collaborate with other MEZ staff members to set and monitor goals, and develop and administer programming.
  • Assist with recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of resident assistants and college mentors for summer camps.
  • Participate in MEZ strategic planning and programming development, particularly concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion and college pipeline. Collaborate with other MEZ staff members to set and monitor goals, and develop and administer programming.
  • Provide instructional and program management support to other MEZ staff members, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three (3) years of related experience. Master's degree preferred. Knowledge of theory and practice in child development, social and emotional learning (SEL), and/or college access/counseling preferred. Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others. Strong relationship skills and social/emotional intelligence. Proven commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Ability to analyze data, problem-solve, and manage multiple work streams within the MEZ, including instruction, community outreach and relationship-building. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google applications, as well as common social media tools. 

Work Locations

The Michigan Engineering Office of Student Affairs operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. This position will be classified as a FLEX position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on site 2-3 days per week and working remotely the rest of the week.
