Advertised Title Post-Doctoral Research Associate (Post-Doc) – Fracture Mechanics Applications to Castings
Campus Location Main Campus (Memphis, TN)
Position Number L22840
Category Full-Time Faculty
Department Mechanical Engineering
Position Summary
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Fracture Mechanics with applications to strength analysis and design of castings. This is a 12-month research position available in Dr. Ali Fatemi’s research group on fatigue and fracture in the Mechanical Engineering department beginning January 2023. Further appointment will be contingent upon performance and availability of funding. The focus will be on development of robust strength prediction methodologies, validated by experimental data, which will explicitly account for the effect of cast steel features which include shrinkage porosity and inclusions, using a fracture mechanics framework. This requires development of procedures for converting NDT indications in castings to defect or flaw information needed for fracture mechanics application. The candidate should have extensive knowledge of fracture mechanics, casting technologies and microstructures, stress analysis, experimental engineering experience and analytical and computational modeling skills (FEA).
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related discipline
- A proven track record of publications on topics mentioned above in leading journals
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
