The Department of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science at South Dakota State University invites applications to fill a nine-month, full-time, benefit eligible, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology position with teaching (20%) and research (80%) responsibilities. This position is supervised by the department head of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science and is open until filled.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will develop a nationally and internationally recognized collaborative research program focused on the impact of abiotic stress factors on the plant ‘s resilience, the pathogens’ make-up, and their interaction to address the impact of climate change in South Dakota’s variable climate growing areas and in the region. The successful applicant will teach an undergraduate course(s) in disease management of field crops. Undergraduate and graduate student mentoring is expected. In addition to maintaining an active research and teaching program, the successful candidate will be expected to engage in service activities, interact and collaborate with colleagues, and generally contribute to the numerous missions of the department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, or closely related discipline completed by the start date.
  • Potential for scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, effectively.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Postdoctoral experience.
  • Experience in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses.
  • Experience in discerning the mechanism of host resistance, pathogen virulence, and host-pathogen interaction using molecular and applied tools.
  • Potential for competitive grant writing and leadership.
