George Mason University, the Center for Spatial Information and Systems (CSISS) in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Air Resources Laboratory (ARL) is seeking applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Cooperative Institute of Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) to work with the Chemical Modeling & Emissions group at ARL in the NOAA Center for Weather & Climate Prediction (NCWCP) in College Park, MD.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will perform research related to improving the modeling of fire emissions incorporated into NOAA weather and air quality forecast models, including multi day fire behavior and propagation, fire characterization and emissions speciation, and ensemble techniques. The ideal candidate will have experience in wildfire research and be familiar with atmospheric chemistry and air quality modeling using models such as CMAQ, WRF-Chem, GEOS-Chem, or other similar 3-D models and creating ensemble forecasts. The selected candidate will be expected to publish the results of their research in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals and make clear, professional presentations at major conferences, seminars, and other internal NOAA meetings.
The position is available from Fall 2022 for 2 years with funding available for additional time dependent on performance.
Required Qualifications:
  • Successfully completed a Doctoral Degree in meteorology, geosciences, atmospheric physics, or chemistry, or a sub-field of physical geosciences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Experience with atmospheric circulation models;
  • Experience in model development;
  • Experience working in UNIX/Linux high-performance computing environments;
  • Strong programming skills in Fortran and Python.
