The George Mason University, Cooperative Institute for Satellite and Earth System Studies (CISESS) in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Air Resources Laboratory (ARL) invites applications for two Postdoctoral Research Fellows. Funding is available for two years with the possibility of extension and or promotion depending on a performance review.

Responsibilities:

Candidates are sought with expertise in numerical modeling related to weather and atmospheric chemistry at regional and/or global scales. The successful applicants must have experience using CMAQ, CAMx, GOES-Chem, WRF-Chem or other comparable modeling systems. The applicants will focus on surface exchange processes such as dynamic surface emissions and/or deposition processes and help develop NOAA’s next-generation modeling systems including the Unified Forecast System (UFS). The selected candidates will be expected to publish results of their research in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals and make clear, professional presentations at major conferences, seminars, and other internal NOAA meetings.
Other tasks include but are not limited to:
  • Complete simulations using the NOAA Unified Forecast System in coordination with NOAA Air Resources Laboratory;
  • Develop and improve surface exchange processes related to atmospheric composition within the UFS earth system models;
  • Evaluate forecast simulations against satellite and in situ measurements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree earned in a relevant science or engineering field;
  • Expertise with gridded meteorological and atmospheric models such as WRF, CMAQ, or GEOS-Chem and their applications to air quality and/or climate change;
  • Experience with Linux HPC systems and Fortran;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Python;
  • Emission preparation;
  • Model development;
  • Remote sensing and in situ observations applied to evaluation and improvement of forecast systems;
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (“Green Card”).
