Job Summary

Under direction of the Principal Investigator, provide moderately complex lab support for a research laboratory using preclinical animal models and cell and molecular biology techniques as related to tissue regeneration and gene therapy for reconstructing hard and soft tissues. Applicant must have demonstrated ability in conducting supervised research, possess excellent communication skills, be self-motivated, work with a high degree of integrity, and possess a willingness and ability to acquire new skills.


Position Description

  • Assist with small animal model in vivo experiments for preclinical studies. Be responsible for the execution and design of animal protocols. Execute, verify, and analyze the experimental procedures and results from approved protocols.
  • Responsible for daily management duties for maintaining trouble-free operation of the research lab, including ordering of supplies and reagents, maintaining equipment, and networking with collaborating researchers and core staff employees. Serve as the laboratory safety officer ensuring annual compliance including excellent recordkeeping.
  • Independently assist with other laboratory techniques such as preparation of RNA and DNA samples, ELISA, western blots, RT-PCR analyses, skeletal dissection and histological sample prep, immunohistochemistry, serum collection, and 3-D image analysis.
  • Provide support as needed to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and senior lab researchers.
  • Other required duties are conducting literature searches and retrieving relevant articles, presenting findings related to progress at regular lab meetings. Preparing and plotting data for quantitative and statistical analysis.
  • Assists with laboratory maintenance and contributes to unit goals.
  • Contributes to a culture of inclusivity and respect.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

  • Basic Qualifications

  • B.S. or equivalent in biological sciences, engineering, or related STEM field.
  • At least one year of practical laboratory experience including hands-on experience preparing laboratory reagents, preparation of tissues for histology, performing enzyme assays and molecular biology techniques and immunohistochemistry.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background check at hire.

  • Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Small animal handling experience, cell culture, data analysis and knowledge of graphics software is also desirable.
  • A willingness to work in gene transfer technology including adenoviral vectors.

  • Physical Requirements

  • May be required to lift, move and transport related laboratory equipment.
  • May be required to work with a variety of hazardous materials.
  • May be required to work with and handle animals.

  • Working Conditions

    Work Is performed in and office/clinical setting.  The primary work location for this position is Boston, MA and in order to be on Harvard payroll, you must reside in one of the following states – MA, NH, RI, ME, CT, VT, NY, or MD. The Harvard School of Dental Medicine will support flexible work schedules subject to individual departments’ business needs.
