R&D Associate Staff Member - Multifunctional Equipment Integration

Purpose:

The Multifunctional Equipment Integration Group in the Building and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Research and Development Staff position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency, equipment-to-grid integration, and improved life cycle climate performance.  

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research related to mass and energy conversion systems including: (1)Fundamental and applied aspects of phase change processes (Boiling, condensation and frosting); (2)Pressure exchange devices for work recovery and their impact on overall system performance; (3)Waste heat recovery systems (Heat/mass exchanger design and associated system performance evaluation); (4) High performance water heating applications; (5) Advanced vapor compression and power generation systems such as sCO2 and ammonia based refrigeration and power generation systems.  The successful candidate will develop novel designs for mass exchangers, conduct experimental campaigns, perform thermodynamic analysis and system modeling, analyze results, prepare technical documents and research publications, and secure new funding. The work will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry.

 

Qualifications:

You will have earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, or a related field.  Research and development experience (including postdoctoral, other academic, research fellow, and/or industry) is preferred, especially in the field of phase change processes and flows. The candidate should possess a strong background (or other direct experience) in mass and energy conversion systems (such as system design, analytical modeling, numerical modeling, experimental design, instrumentation and data acquisition).

Expertise in any of the following areas is of particular interest: (a) heat and mass exchanger design and related disciplines (heat transfer, fluid flow, and coupled heat and mass transfer), (b) membranes, (c) gas-liquid or gas-solid sorption processes, (d) regeneration systems and integration of waste heat resources, (e) process modeling and control systems, combined heat and power generation (CHP) technologies. Experience with building equipment such as electric or gas fired air and water heaters, dehumidification systems is a plus. Familiarity with system integration platforms is also preferred.  

Excellent communication skills (oral and written), as well as strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership are required. The ability to develop and/or maintain strong relationships through active participation in building industry organizations and events is required.  Finally, the successful candidate should have strong, proven publication/patent record.
