Position Summary

The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Technician B to join our team in a full time position to work within the division of Hematology, Oncology & Stem Cell Transplantation. Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics is a world leader in providing care for children. Our mission areas include Healthcare, Education and Research. This position will support the department by providing grant support to the Division of Hematology, Oncology, & Stem Cell Transplantation.

Responsibilities

The Technician B position will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Postdoctoral Researchers, and other Staff, to support grant supported various projects.  Will assist team in assays, sequencing, staining, sample preparation, maintenance of cell lines, image acquisition and processing, writing and or editing IRB applications, grant proposals and manuscripts.

General lab duties will include:

Ordering and maintaining inventory, organizing reagents, cleaning and maintenance of incubators, cataloging frozen samples, maintenance of log books, as well as drafting, updating and organizing SOPs. Working professionally with other staff, and students.

Experimental duties will include:

• Perform studies, process tissue and analyze using techniques including but not limited to RNA, DNA, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and flow cytometry.
• Work to develop methods to use antibodies to phenotype immune infiltrates in tumor tissues.
• Maintain records of experiments and with ordering supplies.
• Perform experiments and data analysis independently with guidance from the Principal Investigator regarding project development. It is important for the candidate to learn independently and have attention to detail.
• Perform statistical analysis and interpret study results of genomic and multiplex data using R and other statistical tools, with guidance from the Principal Investigator and collaborators.
• Preparing samples for gene sequencing, tissue construction, maintenance of cell cultures, preparation of reagents, and keeping a meticulous record of experiments.
• Perform other related duties necessary to the function of the laboratory.
• Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or physics or a completed animal husbandry program or equivalent in education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of various related laboratory procedures and techniques.

• One year of related experience.

Other Requirements

• Able to function independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong organizational and analytical skills and a high degree of flexibility.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
