    Position description

The Department Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for two appointees as Junior or Assistant Specialist in the Daane Lab, in the area of Insect Biology.

This effort is part of an inter-agency research project funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service to examine the biology, ecology and management of aquatic and riparian weeds in the Sacramento/San Joaquin River Delta. We are also working on biological control of coastal terrestrial invasive weeds, including Cape-ivy and ice plant.

The work will primarily be conducted at the USDA-ARS Western Regional Research Center, Invasive Species and Pollinator Health Research Unit (ISPHRU) in Albany, California, and at field locations.

The positions involve laboratory and greenhouse work on a daily basis, and field work in natural aquatic, riparian, and forest environments on an occasional to frequent basis depending on the season. Occasional extended day and overnight field work will be required.

The employees will perform studies in the laboratory, greenhouses and at field sites to examine the ability of insects released as biological control agents to establish populations and have impacts on invasive weeds in natural areas in California.

    Responsibilities:

    • Maintenance of plant and insect colonies
    • Implementation of experiments to examine the effects of environmental conditions and insect or weed accession/genotype on insect reproduction
    • Sampling and dissection of plant samples from the field in the laboratory to assess biological control agent establishment.
    • Conduct research and enter data for the PI (Daane and USDA-ARS collaborators) to analyze results
    • Contribute to publications of research results
