General Notes

The overarching goal of the James T. Willerson Center for Cardiovascular Modeling and Simulation (WCCMS) is developing computational biomechanical models for understanding heart valve and heart disease progression for developing clinical interventions, including prosthetics devices. We develop or utilize a range of unique in-vivo and in-vitro data for elucidating mechanisms that underlie the observed pathologies. Our modeling focus is the detailed incorporation of this data to provide a high level of physical and physiological realism and validation, working at the continuum-cellular, fibrous tissue, and whole organ levels. We ultimately seek to provide cardiovascular scientists and clinicians with advanced simulations for the rational development of treatments for structural heart and heart valve diseases. Such simulations can ultimately lead to reduction in development time, lowering of morbidity and mortality, reduced re-operative rates, and lessened post-operative recovery time. Moreover, the development and use of these tools in the context of patient-specific models will ultimately also allow clinicians to craft cardiovascular therapies that are optimized for the cardiovascular system of individuals, with a resulting increase in success and decrease in risk adverse side effects.

This is a position for a Soft Tissue/Biomaterial Biomechanical Experimentalist with expertise in mechanical testing and evaluation of soft tissues and biomaterials using computer-controlled testing equipment, morphology, and related data analysis. Knowledge of the mechanical behavior of materials, materials testing equipment, optical strain measurements, basic design of simple to moderately complex systems. On the software side, as all the instruments are controlled by LabView knowledge of this software package essential. Some basic familiarity with Python will also be very helpful. In addition, knowledge of basic clean lab techniques, excellent manual skills, basic microscopy and image capturing, and organization and laboratory record keeping are all required. Finally, some minor management of the EER lab is required.  Opportunities for image-guided computational analyses will also present themselves.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic to moderately complex multi-axial biomechanical experimental studies on soft tissues, biomaterials, maintenance and further development of novel experimental equipment,  all leading to peer-reviewed publications.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports and specific sections of project plans, as well as any modifications to the equipment and any required computer programing.   May assist research associates, postdoctoral fellows and faculty with specific phases of research projects.
  • Some minor duties will include oversight of EER lab operations, including ordering of supplies, equipment maintenance related training per university rules.
  • Assist with laboratory tours and lab PR as needed.
