Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician for the Department of Animal Sciences, School of Environmental and Biological Science. This position will oversee laboratory activities and facilitate research in retinoid biology, nutritional biochemistry, and physiology in the laboratory of Igor Shmarakov, Ph.D.
The position will be responsible for ordering supplies, preparation of reagents, maintaining a colony of transgenic mice, performing laboratory experiments involving mice and cell cultures, tissue preparation and cell isolation, lipid extraction and HPLC analysis, DNA, RNA, and protein analysis, as well as organization of lab records, and maintenance of the equipment, in consultation with Principal Investigator and department administration.
General Summary
Under general guidance and direction, provides professional level laboratory technical support duties involving the application of scientific research methods and techniques.
  • Performs multistage purifications, other assays, and tests; propagates non-animal specimens and cell cultures; prepares tissues, chemicals, and/or living subjects for testing.
  • May conduct breeding of small animals and performs related duties as assigned.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility . Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine . Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.
  • A combination of two years college-level science curriculum plus two years relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests may be substituted for the degree.
  • An additional equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience in the above combination.
  • Requires knowledge of scientific empirical procedures.
  • Must understand the fundamentals of the science.
  • Must read and understand technical documents.
  • Must perform basic scientific routines, protocols, and tests and articulate data to researchers.
  • Must lift and move up to 30 pounds
  • Must operate and maintain sophisticated equipment.
  • Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • May require a valid driver’s license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers’ Defensive Driving Course.
  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bookkeeping aptitude is desirable.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in writing and verbally.
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic.
  • Moderate work hour flexibility (occasional weekend or evening work).
  • Prior experience in all or some of the following: rodent handling, biochemistry and molecular biology.
  • Experience in training high school, undergraduate, or graduate students in basic laboratory techniques.
Equipment Utilized
  • General laboratory equipment – thermocyclers, centrifuges, HPLC, pH meters, balances
  • Microsoft Office – Word, PowerPoint, Excel
Physical Demands and Work Environment
