Summary

The Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering (MICDE) is the focal point for the wide spectrum of research in computational science and engineering at the University of Michigan. This includes the creation of new paradigms in computational science, and the development and deployment of sophisticated models from nearly every aspect of science and engineering to support basic research, product development, and forecasting. Computational Discovery and Engineering (CDE) is an enabling discipline with computation widely accepted as the third mode of scientific discovery on par with theory and physical experimentation.

Research in CDE at U-M is taking place in diverse fields, including astrophysics and cosmology, environmental and climate modeling, population and community ecology, defense and homeland security, nuclear and high-energy device development, materials and nanoscience, biophysics, electrical and electronic design, transportation, geophysical modeling, structural engineering, healthcare engineering, modeling of large-scale engineering systems, information technology, data mining, social network analysis and visualization, and computational linguistics. At MICDE, researchers also define fundamentally new paradigms to blend computer science, future hardware and data with computational science.  Affiliated faculty come from many departments within the College of Engineering, the College of Literature, Science and the Arts and beyond.

MICDE, created in 2013, is an initiative of the University of Michigan College of Engineering, College of Literature, Science and the Arts, and the Office of Research.

MICDE is seeking a Managing Director to help guide the Institute as we build and enrich the CDE community, provide new educational opportunities, promote collaboration across disciplines, and encourage the use of CDE inside and outside the University.  The position involves working closely with faculty members -- seeking new resources to support the Institute’s goals, establishing and fostering partnerships in the public and private sectors, coordinating internal and external groups and managing communication.

  • Work with the faculty and support personnel to coordinate new interdisciplinary research grants, such as program project grants, center grants, and multidisciplinary university research initiative grants.
  • Steward long-term research and financial sponsors by facilitating relationships with funding agencies and expanding research and development (R&D) programs through state, regional and national contacts.
  • Develop and cultivate the MICDE Industry Program and coordinate with other industrial affiliate programs on campus.
  • Host and coordinate advisory boards and meetings related to MICDE research.

Required Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree in engineering, natural science, or research-related discipline.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience and/or understanding of computational research.
  • Experience with grant writing, proposal administration, or related work.
  • Experience with industry programs with respect to supporting program partnerships, seeking industry funding, etc.
  • Experience in a higher education research environment.
  • Experience building and coordinating teams of faculty across disciplines.
  • Ability to grasp and synthesize information from unfamiliar academic disciplines.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Doctoral degree in engineering, science or research-related discipline.
