Department Overview

Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) plays an integral role in the success of Michigan Medicine by providing clinicians, educators, researchers, students, and staff with exceptional technology-related information, products, services, and support. 

Summary

The Michigan Data Collaborative Data Scientist Staff Specialist will integrate clinical, financial, and other related datasets to develop and deploy models to enable innovative delivery of care with the strategic goal of improving patient outcomes and population health. The scientist will be responsible for the full stack of data manipulation through visualizations, data science methods, machine learning (including deep learning) and traditional statistical techniques to address clinical quality initiatives. The Data Scientist will develop, validate, deploy, and monitor prediction models to make them available to users within the electronic health record. The Data Scientist will also work with key stakeholders to develop local guidance around important issues to the population, such as algorithmic fairness.  Key stakeholders and customers of this work include the Collaborative Quality Initiative (CQI) leadership members and multidisciplinary clinical care providers. This role will foster collaborations within the CQI teams and the Enterprise Data and Information Services (EDIS) teams within Health Information Technology & Services (HITS).     

This position will report to the Technical Manager of the Michigan Data Collaborative within the Enterprise Data and Information Services (EDIS) Division of Health Information Technology & Services (HITS).

Responsibilities*

Application of Data Science and AI (50%)

  • Research, design, develop and deploy AI and advanced machine learning applications to support Precision Health’s predictive analytics initiatives
  • Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze performance. Application of statistical rigor and machine learning to develop, test and monitor performance of models
  • Propose novel solutions to issues that arise, evaluate the feasibility of the solution, adapt, and refine models as applicable
  • Collaborate closely with the CQI work stream leads, clinicians, researchers, and IT in a multidisciplinary environment to facilitate deployment of implementation and innovative solutions
  • Manage and administer the design and development of data structures and data extracts to support comprehensive data collection and feature extraction for complex analysis
  • Participate in industry reference groups and strategic assessments to identify and contribute to current/emerging issues such as algorithmic fairness, and contribute to defining high impact business intelligence solutions with a focus on quantitative methods, modeling and analytical techniques

Business Intelligence Development (50%)

  • Lead efforts for data acquisition, access analysis, archive, recovery and load strategy design and implementation
  • Run complex queries (i.e. SQL) and existing automation to correlate disparate data
  • Assist with the design of databases for data analytics
  • Harmonize new data development ensuring consistency and integration with existing warehouse structure
  • Review business requests for data and data usage, researches data sources for more efficient data feeds
  • Maintain fluency in existing and emerging data science technologies

Required Qualifications*

  • BA or BS in quantitative field
  • 12+ years of experience

Desired Qualifications*

  • 10+ years’ experience in data querying, data analytics, or data modeling is required
  • Knowledge of the data science stack in Python (e.g., pandas, scikit-learn) is required
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or Data Science or related field (Informatics, Statistics) is desirable 
  • Knowledge of R (e.g., Tidyverse and shiny packages) is desirable 
  • Experience with SQL is desirable 
  • Medical and/or health system experience is desirable 
  • One or more Epic Clarity Data Model certifications preferred and/or familiarity with Epic Cognitive Computing Platform (ECCP) tool 
  • Experience with design and build of relational databases  
  • Experience with data acquisition and multifaceted data pipelines  
  • Experience with Epic application build is preferred 
  • Strong organizational, presentation and written communication skills are required 
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills working with teams of individuals from diverse disciplines is required
