About the Department

The Tauber Institute is a joint venture between the University of Michigan's Stephen M. Ross School of Business and the College of Engineering, working together with multiple industry partners to facilitate cross-disciplinary education in global operations management. For over 25 years the Tauber Institute has impacted operations worldwide. Elements of the program include the Leadership Advantage SM Program, facility tours, international trek and team projects where students work on substantive issues through team-based projects to earn or save sponsoring companies millions of dollars. Purpose

As Managing Director, you are crucial to the Institute's mission. In partnership with the co-directors, you will develop and direct the strategic vision and corporate outreach strategy. Working directly with the three co-directors, you will be responsible for the department administration and operations which consists of 6-9 professional staff, including managing a $1.3M budget in alignment with the mission and core values of the Tauber Institute and its direct constituents (the Business School, the College of Engineering, and the University of Michigan).  You will also lead efforts to ensure a positive student experience as it relates to the programmatic aspects of the Institute.

A necessary element of the Institute's strategy includes forming partnerships with student-desired companies to sponsor substantive 14-week operations consulting projects for teams of Tauber students. This corporate engagement is considered a capstone experience for our students and also strategically positions the Institute to draw qualified candidates and prominent sponsors to the University while generating $1M+ in operating funds to run the Institute and develop new programs.  

What You'll Do

Strategic Initiatives, Execution, and Business Development

  • Work directly with the Tauber Co-Directors to develop and implement the strategic direction for the Tauber Institute including short and long-term goals including the institutes functional performance (i.e. operations, fundraising/development, communications/media relations, and finance/budget)
  • Create and enhance partnerships with new and sought-after companies to attract top Business and Engineering graduate students.
  • Develop and grow relationships with industry representatives, alumni, donors and faculty to to promote the mission of the institute and increase program awareness and improve educational program development.
  • Formulate and oversee the Tauber team project sourcing process targeting current/past project sponsors, Industry Advisory Board companies, and new companies preferred by students.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with potential companies and donors to promote Tauber programs.
  • Develop and head the execution of new business models/products/initiatives to further the Institute's growth and programmatic efforts focused on students.
  • Represent the Institute at internal and external conferences or events. Conduct tailored presentations to different audiences. Serve as a key public face of the Institute to students, Michigan Ross, the College of Engineering, and other University of Michigan stakeholders, external constituents, and media relations.
  • Partner with Michigan Ross, the College of Engineering, and University-wide resources to promote the Tauber Institute and our mission.

Oversight of Staff Management Team

  • Manage three direct reports and ensure all staff are meeting goals and objectives, including Educational and Research activities, Marketing / Communications, Student Recruiting, and Student Programming.
  • Approve annual budget and share with the College of Engineering and Ross School of Business.
  • Develop Assistant Directors and ensure operational continuity.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree required (in engineering, business, or the sciences).
  • 7+ years of direct industry experience preferably in an operations, supply chain, consulting or manufacturing environment.
  • 5+ years of experience leading a team of professionals including recruiting, developing, and performance management.
  • Experience managing relationships with senior-level executives.
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution.
  • Interest in student-focused program development.  
  • Previous experience managing an operational budget.

Salary Information:
The general salary range for this position is $130,000 - $140,000. Candidates can expect to be paid a competitive and equitable salary. Factors used to determine salary include experience, knowledge and skills for the position. All candidates are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor alignment and transparency throughout the recruiting process.
