Job Summary

Wenatchee Valley College is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), and as such, the executive director of diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI) is responsible for providing vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the college district for equity and inclusion priorities and implementation. The executive director is a leader, advisor, advocate, catalyst for change, and institutional resource focused on infusing diversity, equity and inclusion and HSI best practices into all programs and activities, tracking progress toward these goals, and communicating progress to an engaged community. The executive director of DEI provides leadership to ensure the college is continuously working toward a campus environment that is focused on improving student outcomes, is inclusive, and equity minded. The position provides visionary leadership and consultation to administration, faculty, staff and students on diversity, equity and inclusion changes which are integral to fulfilling the college’s commitment to building and maintaining a diverse student body and workforce. Stays abreast of and provides guidance to the appropriate departments or committees about all aspects of diversity and inclusion in higher education, including faculty and staff recruitment and retention. Oversees the President’s Council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (PAC-DEI), oversees state funding for equity, and represents WVC at the state Diversity and Equity Officers Commission (DEOC). This position is funded through the state DEI funding from State bill 5194 and 5227.

Essential Functions

  • DEI Strategic Planning: The executive director of DEI will be essential in creating an institutional equity plan, to identify and examine policies, procedures, and practices that are inherent to the systems at WVC and to coach staff in leading equity conversations, supporting identity development and challenging assumptions. This includes creating and providing to the state board a diversity strategic plan every two years that uses an inclusive process that includes staff, faculty, student and other stakeholders. Work closely with local and national equity experts to advance institutional learning of equity strategies and practices.
  • Outreach to Communities of Color & Community Partnerships: The executive director will collaborate on outreach and recruitment efforts to insure culturally appropriate student outreach. This includes creating a culturally appropriate student outreach program to communities of color, students with disabilities and low-income communities. Work with PIO to revise and update College webpages, social media pages, to increase the use of inclusive communication practices. Collaboration is essential to doing this work and developing strategies to close student achievement gaps and recruit and retain a diverse student body. Working closely with the president, the executive director will create and maintain strong community partnerships including partnerships with the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation.   • Diversity Professional Development and Trainings: The executive director will provide DEI/anti-racism training to faculty, staff and students, and post DEI training framework on public website. Advancing equity, the executive director of DEI will strive to promote professional development for our faculty and staff, and target programming to create an equitable experience for students. The executive director will invest in professional opportunities for faculty and staff to gain knowledge, understanding, and apply equity principles to every day practices. In conjunction with HR, develop and deliver training to supervisors for best practices to support, evaluate, and retain employees of diverse backgrounds. Develop and implement a quarterly employee professional learning schedule which promotes cultural understanding and responsiveness.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Policy: Serve as a resource to the campus and community; ensure coordination and implementation of high impact and promising practices and strategies throughout the college and for communities in which the college serves. Help to implement the college strategic plan initiatives pertaining to diversity and inclusion. Create a welcoming environment on campus for all our diverse students, staff and faculty through cultural competency training and policy building around equity. Use an equity lens to build a campus climate that includes perspectives and representation from all of our diverse community members. Arrange for instruction for faculty around best practices for incorporating diversity learning in the classroom; and promoting a curriculum and culture which infuses diversity, inclusion and equity into the classroom. Engage in efforts to increase community-wide understanding and awareness of identity, bias, discrimination, power, and privilege. Oversee the campus Bias Incident Respond Team (BIRT). Provide leadership in the review and development of college policy, procedure and practice that advances the college’s DEI institutional goals and outcomes. Collaborate with human resources and college divisions and departments to develop recruitment and retention practices for a diverse workforce
  • Title IX & Employee Discrimination Complaints: Work closely with the Title IX Coordinator to respond to employee discrimination complaints. Oversee the training of the Title IX investigators
  • ADA Compliance: Work closely with the WVC Executive Director of Human Resources to meet all obligations to the Office of Civil Rights.
  • DEI Data and Grant Opportunities: Develop metrics to track and monitor accountability of DEI efforts in closing student achievement gaps. Communicate to campus college DEI efforts, progress, and opportunities on a regular basis. Initiate and work closely with colleagues and the grants office on equity and inclusion grant efforts such as Title V.
  • College Climate Assessments:
  • Maintain the annual College’s campus climate survey and state mandated DEI strategic plan in collaboration with Cabinet members, develop a multi-year framework for DEI learning. Lead listening and feedback sessions on an annual basis for the entire campus community.

Related Responsibilities:

  • Chair the Diversity and Cultural Enrichment Committee.
  • Chair the Bias Incident Response Team (BIRT).
  • Provide analysis of legislation and regulations related to equity and affirmative action.
  • Represent WVC at State Diversity and Equity Officers Commission (DEOC).
  • Attend state-wide and national meetings and conferences.
  • Advocate for inclusive pedagogical practices with faculty and support the development of courses and curricula that include equity and inclusion that build intercultural knowledge, skills, and competencies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • At least five years of diversity and equity leadership experience.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English; comfortable translating, reading and writing in both languages
  • Experience developing and successfully delivering curriculum for training related to DEI and intercultural competence.
  • Two years’ experience in a DEI administrative or leadership position, preferably in higher education.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working with historically underserved populations.
  • Demonstrated experience as a collaborator and relationship builder, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Experience providing strategic leadership to promote DEI strategies and practices.
  • Experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four years of administrative and leadership experience.
  • Highly motivated and self-directed.
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple tasks concurrently. Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to act effectively as a member of a team and work collaboratively with academic and support staff, students, and community members.
  • Experience creating digital content (such as Word/PDF documents and web and learning management system content as appropriate to the role) in accessible formats.

  • Problem solving: Ability to assess situations and think beyond the immediate issue to anticipate and fulfill future needs before they become complications.
  • FERPA: Maintain a high level of confidentiality and follow FERPA guidelines.
  • Diversity, equity and inclusion: Demonstrated competency and experience working in a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, gender and racial/ethnic backgrounds and those with physical, emotional and/or learning disabilities.

Additional Information

Terms of Employment:
This is full-time administrative exempt position contracted on an annual basis. The salary for this position is $105,000 annually. The salary will be prorated to reflect the actual number of contract days worked in the remainder of the fiscal year. Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet the needs of the department.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is typically performed in an office setting and requires the ability to sit/stand, perform computer data entry, and operate general office equipment for extended periods of time.
  • Must have the ability to use a computer and a variety of office equipment.

Work Schedule & Environment:

  • Normal work hours are Monday through Friday, but occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Work in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions and distractions.
  • At times, work may be done remotely.
