Job Description
The Vice President for Advancement and External Relations
1) provides leadership of a strategic outreach team, including leadership of College marketing, which includes the web team; admissions/recruitment; public and media relations and external communications; internal/external branding; and government relations.
(2) Oversees a comprehensive institutional advancement program for the college, including development of private financial support for the college and is the Executive Director of the Lake Superior College Foundation.
This position develops relationships with the external and internal college community and oversees all fundraising, marketing, public relations, and government relations. Works closely with Academic and Student Affairs to develop, implement, evaluate, and enhance recruitment/persistence/retention strategies creating a dynamic and responsive Strategic Enrollment Management Plan focused on the cycle of continuous improvement for recruitment, enrollment, retention, and completion.
The VP acts as a direct spokesperson for the College to the media, the legislature, the public and as a consultant to the President in all matters relating to external and internal communications, public relations, government affairs, and fundraising.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in business, marketing, public relations, communication, non-profit management, or a related area.
  • A specialized and broad knowledge of communications, marketing, media relations, and public relations.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in public relations, media relations, marketing, or advancement.
  • Knowledge of campaign management, annual giving programs, corporate and Foundation relations, alumni affairs.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills; ability to write and speak in a persuasive manner.
  • Interpersonal communications skills required to work with a wide variety of constituent groups.
  • Knowledge of national, regional, and local news media, of the political issues and processes that affect the College and its constituents.
  • Experience working with persons from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Master’s degree or higher.
  • Leadership experience in higher education, public relations, or non-profit organizations.
  • Capital campaign and fundraising experience.
  • Ability to lead, organize, and motivate employees and external stakeholders.
  • Supervisory/evaluation skills necessary to assign tasks and review and improve performance.
  • Experience working with a board of community representatives.
  • Organizational and scheduling skills required to supervise the completion of large projects and special events involving large numbers of people, varied resources, and many sources of information. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Knowledge of Minnesota State policies and procedures and sensitivity to educational and social issues that relate to the image of the College, i.e., equity, minority services, academic freedom, taxation, and labor issues.
