The position of Deputy Athletics Director, Business Strategy, helps develop and implement the financial strategic direction in support of our student-athlete experience, ensuring strong communication, integration and teamwork across the entire organization. Will serve as a trusted advisor to the Vice President & Director of Athletics regarding the financial operations and financial strategy of the department. Additionally, this role will serve as a member of the Athletic Department Leadership team and will lead the efforts in forecasting, monitoring and managing all of the department’s daily and long-term financial activities, with strong focus on revenue generation strategies.

Focus of the position will include leadership and strategic oversight to areas that impact revenue and financials, which includes business operations, facility & event management, ticketing, fan experience/engagement, corporate relations, data & analytics, business innovation, and information technology support for athletics (embedded positions from central campus). In consultation with the Athletic Director and Senior Director of Athletic Advancement, this position also leads in liaising with our development team to develop priorities for fundraising and effective gift management strategies.

Strong concentration of the role will be on long term financial planning; reporting and measuring, to include establishing key financial performance indicators, executive reporting and market analysis; revenue generation forecasting and modeling; and overseeing trend and data analysis to maximize current and future resources. Position will also be expected to lead a focus on continual process improvements to ensure operational efficiencies and sound business practices to safeguard financial assets of the organization. Incumbent will collaborate extensively with internal and external partners on maximizing the department’s revenue growth opportunities through sponsorships, licensing and other external partnerships.

Role will be responsible for significantly engaging with University financial leadership and campus partners on all financial matters, planning, reporting, etc. The position ensures the integration and compliance of the department’s financial and accounting activities with those of the university and works proactively to mitigate audit risks and ensure compliance. Position will be responsible for preparing and delivering budget and financial presentations to University and other internal and external stakeholders. In addition, the role will consistently engage with a peer network in the industry for benchmarking and sharing of best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree (MBA or similar) strongly preferred. 7+ years of similar executive financial leadership experience required. Extensive background in financial planning, strategic planning, analysis, revenue generation and modeling as well as financial reporting required. Previous experience in business leadership roles within higher education and/or the sports industry is very helpful and a proven track record of setting and achieving high financial goals and objectives.

Ideal candidate will be an innovative and creative thinker who brings new ideas and strategies to the team; will possess the ability to build strong relationships with key athletics department, university and industry individuals to result in strong collaboration and strategy; be a strong leader of vision and people and confident decision maker and change agent; possess extensive experience in financial management, strategic planning, and creative revenue generation; and maintain a demonstrated commitment to an inclusive culture through recruitment, selection and supervision of personnel. Will also possess excellent organizational, management, communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills and the ability to predict and engage in conversations regarding future industry trends.


Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations preferred.
