    Position description

    Assistant Professor, Global Change Biology
    Department of Integrative Biology
    University of California, Berkeley

The Department of Integrative Biology (IB) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position in the area of global change biology, broadly defined. The potential start date is July 1, 2023.

We seek an exceptional scientist whose research bridges temporal scales and levels of biological organization and who uses new analytical, empirical, or theoretical tools to address fundamental questions in global change biology such as: how do physiological, ecological, and evolutionary systems respond to forces of global environmental change; how do new species form, diversify and coexist in changing environments; and how do molecular evolution and adaptation shape changing genomic and ecological landscapes. Although we will consider a broad range of research programs related to global change biology, we are particularly interested in programs that fill departmental needs for expertise in ecology, marine systems, invertebrate biology, plant biology, or microbial symbioses.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish a thriving externally funded research program, to effectively train and mentor students, to contribute to instruction in IB’s core courses and in their area of expertise, and to contribute to an equitable and inclusive department and campus climate. They will join a department with strong multidisciplinary emphases to complement and bridge already strongly represented fields such as ecology, evolutionary biology, physiology, and paleobiology. UCB has exceptional strengths in many areas of climate change science, technology, economics, and policy, and
our new colleague will have the opportunity to partner in research and teaching. The ideal candidate will develop collaborative links with faculty working in these arenas while also providing distinctive, complementary expertise in organismal and evolutionary biology.

Competitive candidates will demonstrate evidence of strong research productivity, potential to obtain external funding, a commitment to excellence in teaching and research mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs, and a commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, and belonging
consistent with Berkeley’s principles of community (see below).

The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
